Morning, I had my port insertion yesterday. Can anyone tell me how far it is supposed to 'stick out' ? I must admit I wasn't expecting it to be so obvious. Also since I came out of the hospital I cant stop sneezing, am I just a bit of a weirdo or is this normal, I'm worried I'm going to split my stitches ?
Hi LINDALucky
Mine only stuck out so far as a bad insect bite would, mine was only obvious due to scar really. It did stick out more as time progressed as I guess the body is rejecting a foreign body. No sneezing that I can recall!
If you think that something is amiss I'd give your BCN a call or get the chemo nurse to check its normal when you're there next.
Good luck with those stitches (think mine was just glued).
Sam
Thank you for your reply and being daft and staying positive is definitley the only way to be x
Hi ive had my Port in for 8 weeks now and im a bit delicate to say the least.... i feel it everytime they access it for bloods & Chemo but some nurses are better than others at using it. I went and had it cecked this week for any leaks & to ensure its in the right place as i still have a very sore neck since they put it in. I have a medical background & think it makes me more anxious bout infection as the tube actually sits in the right ventricle of the heart!
Mine does stick out as i am quite slim in that area & i can feel the tubing all up to my neck where it turns down into my neck vessel. i can actually feel the 3 bumps through the skin that they have to feel to put the needle in the middle of.
My stitches stayed in til 2 weeks ago & they also used glue but its healed well. soaking the stitches in the bath or shower helps to dissolve them. My wounds have healed well though.
Even though i dont like having it in there, its better than having lots of veins messed up with lots of Chemo to come. My condultant also explained the the Chemo goes to any areas of trauma & can make that side of the chest a bit sore at times. this helped me as mine has always felt a little delicate!
Sorry long chat but hope that helps
Cindy
