Hi all

I have breast cancer and have commenced Letrozole before surgery which is planned for next Friday 12 March.  I have been taking it just over a month but my hair has really thinned and is really patchy.  I wondered if anyone had experienced this and what they may have done to help the situation.

many thanks gillian

  • Hi , a warm welcome to the forum, haven’t seen your name before, but apologies if that’s just my flaky memory! I’m on Anastrozole, similar to letrozole. I have noticed some hair thinning but not noticeably in such a short time. I’m going to tag  as I’m sure I remember her mentioning that her hair thinned at the start but that it was temporary?
Sorry you find yourself here but good that you’ve started treatment. I read on your profile that you’ve taken letrozole prior to surgery because of Covid, which seems common practice now.

Wishing you well and sending love and a big virtual hug. Good luck with your surgery, a week today! HFxxxx

Than you very much HappyFeet for your reply.  My consultant pretty much told me that it was very unusual when you first commence Letrozole and advised me to used this forum to see if I could get advice from any other young lady or gentleman on how they managed with the hair thinning.

I have been using baby shampoo, conditioner and letting it dry naturally but it is hard not to pull at it as it is quite thin at the sides now.

I will tell him however that I have spoken to you and whilst it is unusual it can happen!

I just hope you are feeling well yourself and coping with what is ahead of you or indeed with what is behind you!  Your right I am new to this forum.

  • Thanks for the tag,
yes my hair did thin at the start of Letrozole (clever of her to remember!) but thickened up again.
Obviously I’m not sure quite how much it was the Letrozole and how much the total shock and fast pace that things happened, I only went to my GP with the lump in late February and was on Letrozole early April after investigations and 2 ops, 3 if you count the sorting out of the bleed post mx!
But yes, my hairdresser normally reaches for the thinning scissors and didn’t need to for about 6 months or so.
    Hope yours is also temporary....

    hugs xxx

Thank you Moomy yes it could be that as well or a combination of both maybe!
