Are Breast cancer statistics true? Will 1 in 8 women truly get breast cancer?

So I received a call today from a lady asking for donations for the breast cancer foundation. I sympathized with her and was about to donate until she told me this statistic. Now, I haven't taken stats in a long time, but it seems that it was extremely inflated. When I questioned it, she kind of ignored me and kept asking for less money. I dont have a problem with calling for donations, but this seems almost like fearmongering and I dont really appreciate that.

After someresearch, I found this website trying to explain it, but it seems that their logic is flawed. Can anyone please help understand it a little better? Thank you for your time in advanced.

I've just googled this charity and irs American so the stats may be trus for the US. Personally I'd ignore it and stick to the charities you know because I think your instincts were right it is scaremongering. Please don't be brow beaten into making donations you aren't happy with

  • My oncologist did in thr UK it was 1/7 over a lifetime.  When I was diagnosed another member of staff was also diagnosed with TNBC, and sadly died 6 months later. I returned to work and 3 different teachers came and told me that they'd also had it including an extremely fit (wish I was that fit!) PE teacher.

  • When I asked my oncologist whether my cancer was the hereditary type as my nanna died of breast cancer about 40 years ago, he said mine was not hereditary. He said it was just down to luck and that there is a 1 in 8 chance of getting breast cancer as a woman I am afraid Worried
