Delayed reconstruction

I had a single mastectomy in 2018 and was due to have reconstructive surgery on 2nd April 2020. With the covid crisis there is no possibility of this happening any time soon. Am getting really despondent.  I've not had a check up for over a year and just feel my life is on hold.

Hi Blob welcome to the forum. I can totally understand why you feel that your life is on hold

Covid has held lots of things up and caused some things to be cancelled for the time being but hopefully these will start again soon and you should be able to get the much wanted reconstruction. However, in the current climate with Covid better to stay safe for now.

Keep your chin up it will happen for you and hopefully soon. xxx

  • Thanks for replying. It seems lots of people post on here, but not many people respond.

  • Hi

What type of reconstruction are you having? Have you been in touch with your surgeon? I’m on a couple of sites on a well known social media site (can’t name it or will be in trouble) and it seems like it depends on where you are as to whether hospitals are operating.

  • Hi   I was the same as you, due to have mastectomy and DIEP reconstruction in March 2020 but all cancelled due to Covid! Almost a year later I find myself wondering if I want to go through that now. Spoke to my surgeon who has suggested a reduction on other side and implant reconstruction but that won’t happen until at least the end of the year so I have even more time to think about it. Meanwhile I feel much better now that I have a proper prosthesis instead of the softie I was given...I can now walk in a straight line!!!  Slight smile

It’s been a terrible time for everyone, telephone consultations are not the best, do you have a breast care nurse that you could talk too? Remember you are not alone, we are all hear to listen! x

  • Hi just reading comments, did masectomy operations get cancelled during covid or just reconstruction xx

  • Hi

Mastectomies still went ahead but there was very little reconstruction done- many hospitals are still not doing complicated reconstruction, I have replied to your other post about this - reconstruction covers many different things and you should have a consultation going through the options that are suitable for you - I had an implant and changed to a Diep flap a couple of years later, but this is plastic surgery and requires another team of surgeons, plus not everyone is suitable and until they do scans to check they won’t know- I think what I am trying to say is that a mastectomy and reconstruction are not simple operations , so you really need to know that is what you want , a mastectomy can also affect you mentally , particularly if you have reconstruction that doesn’t match your other breast. Have you called Breastcancernow? This is the site and their phone number is on there https://breastcancernow.org/

  • I could of chose this Tuesday, so masectomy was an option Tuesday, I have large breasts, and my bcn advised I may need to go in and be measured before surgery.  The waiting is affecting me more mentally.  I would of chose this Tuesday and if I could of been given until yesterday I would of. So masectomy with reconstruction for me it is I could have mri and need to have this cuz of ares of dcis is 5cm away from my invasive xxx
