Hello.
I used to have annual mamograms as I had a family history of breast cancer. When I was 49 I went for my mamogram and the woman said, "oh you will be going on the national list as of next year as you will be 50". I asked, "oh? Does my risk of getting cancer decrease when I reach 50?" "no! she repiied it increases!" So why do we get moved on from annual to once every three years?
I am 51 now and have been diagnosed with breast cancer, grade three, after finding a lump two months ago..... If I had had my mamogram last year they could have found it a lot sooner and now the delay I've had in treatment wouldn't be so worrying.
I think it is something I will write to my mp about unless anyone knows of a valid reason why this is done?
Hi , I had no idea that this happened, I’ve just assumed that those who have annual mammograms continue to do so. I can understand why you’re questioning it as it must be tortuous feeling that your cancer could have been picked up sooner and presumably pre Covid. You need an answer but I’m not sure who will provide it. Would PALS help with such a query? Can’t see why you shouldn’t write to your MP, it’s an important issue to clarify. My only other idea is to see whether you can find NICE guidelines?
Hopefully someone who knows will pop on and answer your question but I’m also going to tag a lady here who always seems to be well informed and often posts research articles. I hope you don’t mind Londonmumof2, hope ive got the right member, and also I know from another thread that you’ve not been well so forgive and ignore me if you’re not up to replying.
Wishing you well , doubts and concerns like this don’t help, it’s a difficult enough process as it is. Love and hugs, HFxx
Don’t know if this helps, I’ll try to post the link. I don’t know which category you are in. Is it worth posting in the Ask a Nurse section here? HFxx
Hi HappyFeet, hope you're ok and Happy New \Year to you!
I actually got an answer from a friend of mine who is a radiologist and apparently each time they give someone a mamogram they are giving them radiation, it's a low grade x ray, so they are putting you at risk of developing breast cancer every time you have a mamogram! This was never explained to me when they put me on the yearly programme. she gave me the quick answer, I'm sure someone will have a more in depth explaination somewhere!
