I received a letter telling me that my second follow up appointment has been cancelled due to Coronavirus and I am to have a telephone consultation instead.

No mention of my annual mammogram.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Heard all on the news this morning about over 1m mammogram screenings missed during COVID and over 8000 people could now have underlying breast cancer. My mammogram got cancelled during COVID, but got rearranged and I had it about 3 weeks ago. Seems to be a second spike too right now.

Although, I am glad the press are shining light on this issue, I've also heard that lots of medical practices are advocating screenings at the min - know Pall Mall Medical, where I visit for my mammogram have a calendar that urges people to get their mammogram screenings and the importance of it -

  • HI Jessica,

Thanks for the reply. It's terrible that so many people are missing out on screening. I'm so glad that you have finally managed to have yours. I would normally have a mammogram at the hospital at the same time as my follow up appointment. But, no mention of it in the cancellation letter. Given that I had Triple Negative Breast Cancer which has a high rate of recurrence in the first three years (this is my second year) I am a bit concerned about it. Just have to wait until I speak to the consultant on Monday.

I have had the same thing happen to me today . Waiting for call now as consultant in isolation. My appointment was 1340 today still not heard from anyone! Had mastectomy on 5th aug have had no treatment since. Feeling fed up

  • I guess it depends where you live.  I live in Dorset, low risk and I had my annual on time during the first wave and have an appointment booked in for my  Dexa scan.  More or less 3 years since the original, which is when it should be.

I haven't needed to see anyone else face to face, but do chase your annual - it'll be a year following your diagnosis.  My nurse who did my mammogram said when I asked her if she was concerned about doing her job during coronavirus "I would be more concerned if anyone didn't come to their appointment".  The nurses are dedicated to ensuring we get the best possible care, so don't worry about chasing for it, if it becomes overdue.

Hi thank you for your advice. The meeting was not for a yearly check up it was to decide on treatment plan after mastectomy on 5th aug this year, feeling very deflated that it has taken this long to organise any treatment and having to wait all day to be called, he eventually phoned at 1700 3.5 hours after appointment. I think we have a plan now so feeling better. He is isolating as he had covid symptoms and waiting for test results

  • Hi  I’m due my 2nd anniversary mammo later this month, early next month. I’m going to ring next week the see about this. If you are having a telephone consultation I would ask them when they phone when can you expect your mammo x

  • Hi Beachwalker19,

Spoke to my consultant yesterday.  He said that I should receive an appointment for my mammogram in the post soon. He said they're still doing them, they're just running a little late due to the virus.
