Hello everyone

I’m wondering if it’s common to get tightness in the pec from radiotherapy? I felt it coming on during treatment (May 2020) and although I was doing daily yoga couldn’t stretch it out. I’ve since had a mastectomy and struggle with the overhead shoulder exercises. I’m almost there straight overhead, but would do a rubbish snow angel!

Is it just me? Or has anyone found anything that has helped?

Meantime, I’ll hope it doesn’t snow x

I don't know the answer to your question, but sure someone will reply shortly. Have you spoken with your physiotherapist?

I'm currently struggling with those same exercises myself as am still recovering from anc, which I had about a week ago. I'm due to have radiotherapy in 6-8 weeks once I've regained my full mobility. I seem to remember my physiotherapist said to me to carry on with those exercises after radiotherapy too and preferably for life, if you're worried give your physiotherapist a ring it's what she's there for, best of luck x

Physiotherapist? I’ve got a piece of paper! Just the standard sheet from Breast Cancer Care with 7 basic, post op exercises.
Ive discussed it with my bc nurse and when she’s back from holiday will bring it up again to see if I can be referred. Interesting to hear about different levels of service.

I certainly recommend doing the lateral above shoulder exercises through and after radio. I didn’t - it wasn’t suggested. My radiotherapy was about 6 months after my second op, and before my mastectomy.

Thanks for your reply, and good luck with your recovery and radiotherapy x

  • Hi

I had rads similar time as you (mx previously - see profile) and find pecs v tight at times, the advanced BCC exercises do help (I know this particularly when I don't do them!).  I'd carry on exercising and pushing yourself gently to do more with whatever side is impacted, I find that my improvement is slow & steady, patience is definitely needed!

You may also find it useful ( I do as I have a pants memory) to write down what you did when & how it felt, helps you monitor progress so you'll know when you deserve a pat on the back.

When I raised the discomfort that I still have & tightness as with other things I was told that its to be expected after treatment/surgery so manage your expectations.....

I can easily do all the advanced exercises now but some do still feel tight and make me wince...but I just crack on!

    Hi Sam

Thank you for your words of wisdom. Yes, I’m probably expecting too much, expecting to be my old normal. But that time has really passed and I should celebrate improvements rather than expect miracles.

I’ll keep going with it, have a chat to my breast nurse and see if she thinks there’s anything additional that might help.

    stay daft and positive!
