Letrozole and mood

Hello, I'm a newbie to this so sorry if this has been discussed before.

Quick background.  I'm 61, have been living with anxiety for years, been taking Paroxetine which has helped me enormously to live a life generally free of anxiety.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer in March (just before lockdown) and luckily it was stage 1, grade 1 so very easily treated.  I had surgery to remove the lump in April, and 1 week of radiotherapy in June.

I was given Letrozole for the cancer, started taking it in April.  Leaving aside all the issues with Covid, I have been reasonably well since.  However, just a few weeks ago, my mood just tanked.

With my history, I immediately assumed this was the anxiety/mild depression talking, so my GP increased my dose of Paroxetine. 3 weeks in, and it's not getting much better.

Is there anyone else who has had this combination of medication?  Did you have a low mood as well?

I'm wondering if the answer is a change of medication. My cancer was oestrogen receptor positive.  There was a bit of a discussion about Letrozole/Tamoxifen, but frankly I just went along with what they said. You tend to trust the experts. Also due to Covid I have missed out on a lot of aftercare.

So, has anyone moved from Letrozole to Tamoxifen? Did it help?

I know I need to see my GP, but a few opinions here would be useful.

Thanks for reading, and best wishes to you all.

Hi I haven't been on here in a while myself but something prompted me to reach out to this lovely group of ladies this morning.  Firstly, let me say congrats on finding and having your BC discovered and treated early on.  I'm not going into my whole story, but am 3 years out from my surgery and RT.  I was on Letrozole for right at 3 years and did fairly well with it, but as time went on my skeletal issues became pretty awful and I asked my Oncologist about stopping the meds.  Her suggestion was to switch over to Tamoxifen.  I've now been on it for about a month and was horrified to find something akin to menstrual cycles starting again.  Jeepers, I'm 68 and dealt with that mess far too long to go through it again.  And of course I wasn't even remotely prepared for menstruation.  Right now I'm awaiting a consult with my Dr., and hope she's going to switch me back to the Letrozole.  I found that various brands of the letrozole have differing affects on me.  Maybe the brand you're currently taking is the culprit.  Ask your Dr. if they can get your a different brand.  Barring that, perhaps you could research and find some mindful classes that will help with the anxiety.  I never had that issue with Letrozole, but it does so many funky things to your body, that I sure wouldn't rule it out.  Still and all, from this side of the pond, I prefer Letrozole over Tamoxifen.  Just an opinion, but hope it gave you some food for thought.  Mira

Hi Mirabo, thanks for your response.  Having coped with general anxiety for over 30 years, I think I've tried all the relaxation/mindfulness stuff there is!  None of it stops me waking up feeling rubbish... But I will definitely talk to the GP.
