Hi - just had a call from the BCU to say that my HER2 test has come back negative. I’ve been diagnosed with stage 1 grade 1/2 breast cancer and I’m heading for a left mastectomy in about 3 weeks. I know being HER2 negative means I don’t have to have chemo now before surgery which I’m pleased with as didn’t want my surgery delayed. Is it good news that I’m HER2 negative? Am I right in thinking HER2 is to do with the growth speed of the cancer? X

  • Hi .my story on profile if you want to read

Yes it's good news  I'm HER2+ positive  . My results were after my mastectomy so was then told I needed chemo . You are right in your thoughts of it affects growth rate .The good news is they now have preventative treatments which I am receiving ? So a positive result is not the bad news it used to be .

Best wishes with your treatment going forward .. mastectomy is not as bad as your imagination is telling you . Discomfort rather than pain just take the drugs and listen to your body for rest and food . Important to do your arm exercises to maintain movement . My advice would be  to check your wound area as soon as possible otherwise it can build up in your head so just gave a peek .

    take care

Thanks for your reply and your good advice. Much appreciated x

  • Hi

There are different types of BC and HER2 is one of the aggressive ones as Northerner says.  Have they told you what type you have? are you ER/PR positive?  if you are'just' ER and or PR positive with no lymph node invovlement (which if they are stating stage 1) then you might well not even need chemo at all!  I had ER/PR+ grade 1 stage 2 (and DCIS grade 3) and had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy.  So, yes, you are right as Northerner says, it is very good news for you.  If you are ER+ then it's usually tablets for 5 years minimum.

    Best wishes,
