Hi everyone,
I hope everyone is keeping well and cool in this heat! I am new to the group!
My mum had breast cancer 17 years ago and yesterday she was diagnosed again with breast cancer. It seems very treatable, which is good news, however, because she has had it before and because my mum has been complaining of pain in other areas of her body, they want to check that it hasn't spread elsewhere in the body. They plan to do CT and bone scans.
These scan results are giving me more anxiety than the breast cancer result itself.
Not really sure what I'm asking, but wondered who else has been in a similar situation?
Thank you.
I am sorry to read that your mum's cancer has returned after so many years. Unfortunately she is not alone. There are several ladies posting at present who are in a similar situation. However, all seem very positive. Research has led to improvements to the treatment which means that there are many successful results. As your mother was told.....she has every reason to be hopeful and I'm sure she too will find a number of differences.
As for the scans....well, it may be a PET scan which actually identifies cancer anyway in the body. I had one which showed nothing and it has been such a reassurance in subsequent years. But if it should show another area......well, it will enable the oncologist to deal with every area simultaneously and without further delay. This would be much better than waiting to see if other symptoms might develop later on. I don't think you should allow this to be frightening ......just informative to give your mum the best chance of recovery because anything she needs will be being done.
I expect your mum still remembers it is the waiting for a definite plan which is the worst time as without definite knowledge, your mind goes into overdrive. If it is possible to have some distractions while you wait, you may find it helps you both. Once you have a plan, you will feel more in control again.
I hope all goes well with your mum's tests and treatments. You will be a great support to her.
Love Karen
Hi ' Sorry to hear that your Mum has had a breast cancer diagnosis again . I have been in this position recently -see my profile. I'm sure she will be quite surprised by how many changes to the treatments there have been in the intervening years, I know I was! It seems that her Consultant is checking everything before making a plan and that is very sesible. As Lacomtekp says the waiting is the worst bit and once there is a plan you will all be able to come to terms with things.I won't tell you that I wasn't shocked because I was- but I can honestly say that even during Covid the care I received was excellent . O.K. some of the conversations were over the telephone and not face to face, but the explanations were fully explained and all my questions answered.I'm now looking forward to a full and happy life and hopefully that will be the case for your Mum. Sending big hugs to both of you xxKwissy
