Swelling and pain after surgery

Hi I hope everyone is doing well.

I am new to the group and this is my second week after surgery. I had stage 2 cancer in my right breast and had the surgery on 22 june. My right breast and lymph nodes were removed.  I had to have the drain out the day after as it was causing too much pain. I have had two visits to my hospital to have the area drained. I did ask about the swelling under my armpit but was told that was natural. I hate asking too many questions while I'm there so I didn't push the issue.  Does or did anyone else have swelling under the armpit and if so how long did you have it.

I tried google but let's face it. Everything you search on google can end in freaking you out more

I thank you for any time you can give to my question

  • Hi June

    I'm doing great ta!

It sounds like you may have a seroma, if it is the swelling will be quite jelly-esque as it is fluid filled.  These are perfectly normal after surgery and expected...though quite annoying!

If that's what it is I still have one of mine (surgery was mid March - see bio)...the one in the lumpectomied boob disappeared recently but the one on the mx side (mine is where the side of your bra is under armpit) refuses to budge.  My support team doesn't like aspirating them as it increases the risk of infection, and therefore lymphedema (which we do not want!) so I massage it regularly and keep my fingers crossed...

However I would strongly suggest that you do ask the your support team to confirm my suspicions (as it could be something else altogether) and please don't feel you're asking too many questions of your support team - that's what they're paid for and I am sure they would rather you ask than worry...

Hope your recovery is a speedy one.

    Hi Sam

Thank you for getting back to me . The information you have given me is very helpful. I have a call from my surgeon tomorrow with the results of the breast  biopsy.  I did talk to my nurse yesterday when I went to have the area drained again  and she felt the lump and said it's fine. The thing is when you have something like this done you tend to worry over every lump and bump. Since the breast was removed I have been numb under the arm and the whole breast area,. The hospital staff see it every day and tell you it's fine but I still worry. I figure if it was common for everyone I would just shut up about

I think I will ask him tomorrow to put my mind at rest.

Good luck also to you for a speedy recovery.
