I’ve been anxiously waiting for my biopsy results, I had gone to the GP because of a breast lumps and breast pain. I had my appointment at the breast clinic, whilst there I had a mammogram then 2 core biopsies guided by the ultrasound because she said there was a suspicious area of calcification in a line behind the nipple area, the surgeon also placed a marker in my breast and re did the mammogram to check she’s biopsied the right area. She checked under X-ray that she had captured the clarifications too. The lump I can feel is an area of cysts and the calcification is just beyond them! My breast is still aching and just feels heavy somehow. Today I spoke to the nurse over the phone and she said the surgeon wasn’t there and his notes read that he will have to see me for further tests as the area biopsied shows atypical cells and crystals not calcifications! She said don’t worry because it didn’t show cancer.
I am confused because I can’t find on the internet what the difference is in crystals and calcifications and why do I need further tests if it’s not cancer. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Why does my breast hurt? Is atypical cells something to worry about or is it a common finding and are they connected to my cysts which I think are causing the pain? I’m on pins now until they get back in touch with me.
Any advice will be gratefully received.
Hi and a warm welcome to this great club, no one would choose to have to join but it’s a safe place for support and shared experiences.
Re your situation, I’ve had tearing breast pain years ago when I was breastfeeding. It was diagnosed as duct ectasia I think, and I had to stop feeding on that side but carried on with the other. The baby was 9 months by then so it was manageable with one! Fast forward about 15 years and I had a pea sized lump which was painless, but had ‘atypical’ cells. It was removed and turned out to be a benign fibroadenoma. Several years after that I had ‘lumpiness’ which on ultrasound were shown to be cysts. Finally almost 2 years ago I found an area of thickening which was cancer. It’s been treated and I’m on hormone therapy now.
I haven’t heard of the crystals you mentioned but I’m sure someone here will pop on at some point with some information.
This waiting time is truly tortuous, lots of us have found it the worst time of all because you’re in limbo, imagining all sorts. Try to stay away from Dr Google, lots of out of date stuff out there or just wrong. Keep posting and asking questions, let’s hope you get some answers soon. Try to bear in mind that most breast issues aren’t cancer; and if yours is, breast cancer is very treatable. There are lots of us here still going strong! Love and gentle hugs, HFxx
Thanks for the reply, it’s hard not to search the internet for the answers. The only thing that I can see on the internet is that crystals are the same as calcifications! I feel that the wait to find out what’s wrong Is horrendous.x
