Hi guys, I'm 36 and have stage 3 breast cancer. Had lumpectomy 2 weeks ago and have just had my pre assement for chemo and will be starting next week. Has anyone got any advice about wigs?? I was told today by the team that I won't be getting any help from them as all salons are closed. I'm terrified of it all anyway but the thought of being completly bald all the time is worrying aswell.

  • Hello

I got a nice wig off Amazon. It was about £70. Thry had a few choices. I tend to wear hats and scarves more than the wig

  • Hello Vicki,

Like you I missed out on the wigs even though I have a voucher. In the end, because I'm shielding with my husband and not going anywhere, I bought some turban scarves which I have worn two or three times when Ive managed to tie them. A friend sent me a Lindy-hop hat which was fun!! The best one though was one from another friend which is a turban that lets me weave my own different coloured scarves through and I actually enjoy and feel comfortable in that one.

However I clippered my hair really short and since then my husband did it down to 3/8" which helped me cope with it as it fell out. I thought it wouldn't matter, but it did and I cried!! The ladies on here helped me through it and suggested a pet sticky roll to collect the rogue hairs off jumpers and pillows etc., BRILLIANT!!

Now, because I don't go anywhere other than the hospital, I either wear a warm woollie hat knitted by my sister and stylish! or a big wide brimmed sunhat. I'm happy with the compromise. If I do get to spend my voucher later I want to be able to choose one properly. Oh yes, I also get comfort from a sleep hat at night, bamboo and soft!

Hope this helps and the ladies here are great!!

    Take care,

    Hi

I have a number of wigs, beware of the cheep real hair sites on internet (check them on trust pilot) they aren’t always as  described and delivery times are long. I was told that if your having EC chemo your hair goes about 14 days after first treatment. The shops are opening on Monday so you may be able to get in to try some on before your treatment starts. I also got a hair piece to wear under a hat/scarf which was useful to start with (looked like fryer Tuck without hat) think simply wigs sell them. I decided not to have cold cap as I was having 8 lots of chemo, however only the first 4 were EC and my hair grew back while having the other chemo.  I have wigs for different occasions, like clothes - short pixi for windy days, modern hairstyles to feel sassy, long for going out etc. Some days I may have worn all of them!! Keeps my husband and neighbours on their feet, it can be fun.
It’s a scary time for you but it will be fine, you are stronger than you know.
    big hugs. Cate 22

    Hi

My experience is slightly different as I am using the cold cap. I have had one session 2 weeks ago  so still early days. I have ordered a wig and was helped by a recommendation by my chemo unit. I was able to use my nhs voucher against the cost. They were extremely helpful but all done by telephone consultation. I believe they do visit the unit weekly but not at the moment because of covid. I bought a pixie cut wig from the Raquel Welch range which I am awaiting delivery. I bought a wig in case I do loose my hair but will use scarfs and hats.

I thought I may do a post about my cold cap experience in a few weeks when I've seen how I get on.

  • Cry,that's a shame they won't help you with a wig Cry I bought a few from Amazon between £30-£70 as well as my expensive one but found they tangled really quickly. A shorter one would probably be ok. I found a really good one from headscarves by ciara that's designed for the gym so you can tie it back. Only downside was you have to wear it with a headband(included) it was about £60 and I prefer it to my posh one! Lots a sites well really nice headscarves, especialot for summer a wig might get really ho t.

good luck, it's horrible when your hair falls out but I tried to spin it as the chemo doing it's job! Xxx
