Gene testing?

I was not offered gene testing and just about to have radiotherapy (no chemo) with 2 nodes affected. Surely I should be offered some sort of test to see if I would benefit from chemo or not? My oncologist hasn't mentioned it but a friend did the other day.

  • Never been mentioned to me, I had 3 positive nodes and micropapillary so had chemo and rads. But first in my family to have cancer and hormone positive so I thought that was why.

  • Hi

I can see why you might be concerned about this. Your team will of course know your particular situation well and there must be a reason why they feel that there wouldn't be enough gain for you from chemotherapy. Have you tried entering your details into the NHS Predict website? It will give you an idea of the percentage gain from the various treatments. I had Grade 2 IDC 26mm ER+ PR+ HER2- which was in three nodes. I was told I really needed both the chemo and the radio. Prior to them finding it in the nodes (from the mastectomy results) I was told that if the nodes were clear, they may send a sample off for Oncotype Dx testing to see if I would benefit from chemo or not. In the end, that wasn't necessary as it was clear-cut from my team's point of view that I needed the chemo. I know they know best, but it is your body and if you feel that you will worry about the fact that a test wasn't done to see if chemo would help you, then I reckon there is no harm in calling your BCN and asking if they would run a test for you? Best of luck with everything x

Looking at your details your cancer was lobular? Chemo is shown to have no real benefit for this type of cancer so I am guessing that is why you weren't offered the Oncotype test? Even though it may seem that you have a similar diagnosis as someone else, the pathology of your cancer is unique to you, and one thing I have found on my journey is that it is impossible to compare ourselves to others, mainly for that reason - but if I were you I would ask the question of my BCN just to make sure and put my mind at rest?

    Love the name!
