Mastectomy and fluid

Morning all. I’m new to the group so I’m sorry if this question has been asked a million times.
I had a left side mastectomy and lymph node clearance 12 days ago and my breast and under arm have become swelled with fluid. I have contacted clinic who say this is normal as I didn’t have a drain fitted. It’s just that my under arm area is becoming very uncomfortable.
does anyone have experience with this? I’m doing my exercises 3 times a day. Is there anything else I can do to help? How long does it last? Any thoughts most welcome.

  • Hey...firstly welcome!

i had a mastectomy and node clearance....I did have a drain but when it was removed I had a build up of fluid. It was weird rather than painful. I did wonder if it needed to be drained but told to wait for a while. Sure enough after probably a week or so (sorry can’t remember exactly) it went away. In the meantime if I pushed it, it sounded like I had liquid under my skin....slushing around!

If it persists I would recontact your clinic...and if you are uncomfortable....persist! I spent way too much time not wanting to be a ‘problem’...be a little bit pushy if you can!

    Wishing you a speedy recovery!

    Hi

I too had a left side mastcetomy 10 weeks ago with lymph node clearance and had swelling around the arm, about the size of a large egg for at least 4 weeks  it is uncomfortable but it does improve and the swelling will reduce. However I then got an infection  and I had to have antibiotics. After another couple of weeks (week 6) my arm was normal size. The exercising 3 times a day really helps but do take a pain killer 1 hour before if you need too. If you are still concerned contact your breast care nurse. It is early days and will need time

    Take care
