I had a mastectomy 3 months ago. Stage 2 Grade 1 BRCA negative. Im on Tamoxifen. My Gyn told me I have a fibroid that slightly grew. Everything else was fine.Uterus was fine. There is no pain or bleeding from the fibroid. I have a feeling she is going to try to talk me into a hysterectomy. I don't want one.Im terrified to have another surgery. Is it necessary to have a hysterectomy after breast cancer? How high are the percentages of getting ovarian cancer after breast cancer? Thank you for any info.

  • Hi

Presumably as you are on Tamoxifen you are pre-menopoausal?  This is an article on endometrial cancer following breast cancer and here is some more information in relation to tamoxifen from NHS- but in all honesty, I think you know the answer is "how long is a piece of string?".  Every individual is different and it might be that the discussion you had maybe was to reassure you?

NHS and fibroids information here, which sounds very reassuring - especially as you are now taking tamoxifen to reduce your oestrogen levels

I totally understand not wanting further surgeries - one is plenty enough to get through with the diagnosis of cancer isn't it?

You could talk it through with your BC nurse/oncologist to ask them their thoughts - with a preprepared list of questions you have.  No surgeon is going to recommend a surgery that is unnecessary and one of the questions you might want  to ask them is could they scan annually when they do the annual mammogram? that sort of thing. Unless they are specifically recommending a procedure to you, of course.

Don't panic - as what you THINK they are trying to tell you might be the complete opposite.  Ask them straight questions and see what answers they come up with.

I hope you are recovering well from your mastectomy - still early days being only 3 months ago, so I hope the pain/ discomfort is easing for you.

    Kindest wishes,
