I am 4 1/2 weeks post surgery and ended up with second infection and then my arm and breast swelled at weekend and just had it checked and have a seroma. The radiologist used a needle to take out the fluid and it is going for tests. I am due to start chemotherapy a week Saturday so has anyone else had seroma and did it keep coming back and if so for how long. Did it delay your chemo?

    Hi,

I had a mastectomy on 31st March, and developed a seroma afterwards, which they drained.  But it did fill up again, although not as much, and quite vigorous massage along the wound site is helping, as is wearing the softee prosthesis 24/7  to push the skin against the chest wall. I’m having no further treatment, so I can’t tell you if it affects chemo. But as I understand it, a seroma forms where there’s a space. I developed one after breast reduction surgery when I had my first breast cancer (this is my second primary in the same breast), it’s the body’s way of cushioning two areas of tissue that meet where they don’t normally, like an internal blister, cushioning the space.

Your breast team should be able to tell you, I’d give them a call about your concerns, my breast nurses are happy to answer any queries. Good luck. :)

Thanks I have been massaging and I have never taken my supporting bra and softie off since my operation and it still occurred hopefully it won’t come back then. I saw the nurse yesterday but a different one, she gave no explanation other than massage
