I will ask my medical team this question when I get a chance, but I thought I’d put it out there in case anyone has any particular knowledge or experience.

I’ve had six cycles of FEC-T, the last being on 7 May. So I’m no longer “actively” receiving chemotherapy. How long until my immune system might have recovered to the point where I no longer need to be in the shielded group?

  • Hi

If you go on gov.uk guidelines for shielded

you will see all that puts someone on shielded

Having read them on numerous occasions Joy

I can tell you the guidelines state three month after chemo . Then the list is lengthy of other studs etc . I had last chemo Dec. So just on the border line . I am now on Herceptin which is an antibody drug which is on list also type two diabetic which is under control . Feel comparatively fit would say about 90%of pre cancer .  Alas been indoors except for hospital visits since March . Best of luck when talking to team

  • Hi

sorry I don’t know the answer but thought I would send you a wee friendly   message . I would say it was early days for you . I suffered fatigue for well over a year , I still have neuropathy in my toes . So you see chemo is such a powerful  treatment . I know you want to get back to “normal” but there is no normal just now for anyone . In fact if you live in England I would say this is a very dangerous time , people become complacent and it will take a few weeks for any effects of the rules being stood down a bit to see any consequences.
So I would definitely stick to the side of caution . If I were you I would continue to shield for at least a month , then you should have been able to do ask your team .  You could phone the helpline on here and speak to the very knowledgeable people on the phone . They are wonderful and so knowledgeable, kind and friendly .
    be kind to yourself

    lots of love

  • I spoke to my Macmillan nurse this week about this. I had my last chemo on 3rd March so I am now 11 weeks post chemo and my bloods are all back to normal. I was confused about the advice because the shielding letter talks about those actively receiving chemotherapy or 4 weeks post chemo. She said I should continue following the shielding guidance and that some oncologists say that you can still be vulnerable up to a year after chemotherapy. I must admit, like you, I am desperate to get back to normal but there is no normal now for any of us. I just have to accept that I still need to look after myself. The last thing we need, after everything we have been through, is to go down with this virus. Look after yourself. Xx

  • Hi. I am symilar to you. I had my last chemo in February .Every time I see breast nurse they said to me to remember to stay at home and go out only for hospital appointment. I start feeling myself again and kind of "back to normal" again so I find it a bit difficult but as you said better be safe than sorry .

I read new research suggests that the effects of chemotherapy can compromise part of the immune system for up to nine months after treatment.

    Take care and stay safe
