Hello

I am recovering from mastectomy and lymph node surgery which was 5 weeks ago.

I have been doing the exercises every day but I think I have developed a cord from my armpit down to my elbow. It’s a bit painful but because there isn’t a breast clinic at the moment I can’t be seen.

Does anyone have any tips about managing it please?

    Hi

Until you get reply from someone with a more recent experience of this - To give you a bit of an insight into the many messages re Cording here just click this group search results link.

Hope this helps for now, G n' J

  • I had a facetime appointment with a physio - why don't you suggest the same.

In lieu of that, and as I had the same recently, 7 weeks after surgery...I was recommended (by physio) to apply moisturiser (non perfumed, no nasties etc) to whole arm and gently stroke it from top to bottom for 5 mins or so twice a day.  I could see the cord in the crease of my elbow so was advised to be a little more forceful in that area.  Also stretching really helps get rid of cord so carry on with your exercises.

My BCN had suggested deep tissue massage but the physio strongly advised against it, you need to be on the gentler side of massage.

2 weeks later it’s either gone - or a lot better - there’s still so much going on its difficult to tell!

    Good luck

    Hi

I have/had cording I am 7 weeks post mastcetomy and am just getting my arm back to normal. I did have an infection at 5 weeks which slightly delayed things but keep on doing the exercises particularly the hand walking up the wall on your mastectomy  side and the floor exercises. Although quite tough please persevere and continue 3 times a day. Also I was advised to take pain killers prior to doing the exercises it may help. Hope this helps or speak to your bc nurse.

  • Hi and

I also have cording. It arrived after mastectomy in August 19 and slnb but got a lot worse after the lymph node clearance. it is very visible, looks like a huge elastic band pulled too tight. The physio always grimaces when I stretch my arm up..!  I was advised the same massage as Yorkshire defector, and the usual exercises. I thought it was improving, but then I went through chemotherapy from October 19 to Feb 20 and it worsened. It is now extending down through part of the area around my ribs and also the top of my back. I am really keen to see my physio but obviously that has been stopped due to Covid so thanks for the FaceTime tip, YD, I will ring and ask if there is any chance of that. I know its important to keep up with the exercises and massage to avoid cording hanging around for a long time, so I think that is your best bet. Good luck x
