Hi all, my first time posting so here is my story...

I’m 36 and was breastfeeding my 5 month old baby when I started to get pain in my breast and armpit. This is December 2019. I finally get an appointment to see my GP on 31st December who diagnosed mastitis (despite no ‘normal’ symptoms of this) and gave me antibiotics. This did nothing and I was back and forth over the next 3 weeks until eventually the doctor did a referral. By this stage I could see a slight change in the shape of my breast. I saw the breast surgeon on 8th February 2020 who advised me lumpy tissue from breastfeeding however agreed for an ultrasound for my peace of mind....an hour later telling me it’s highly likely that I have breast cancer and that it was likely in my lymph nodes too. I had the result confirmed on 14th Feb, 1.4cm grade 2 HER2 positive oestrogen result 4 so mid range.  Biopsy of lymph nodes following week was positive.

I was due to start chemo on 16th March and it was cancelled. Due to have an op on 1st April and that was cancelled. I finally had my op last Wednesday on 22nd April.  I’m healing well and am due to see my consultant in 10 days. I am however freaking out about how long this has taken and how long I can expect to wait for my chemo. My CT scan was clear mid February but I had a lump come up in my groin about 3 weeks ago and my breast nurse hasn’t felt it but said highly unlikely to be related and said mention to surgeon when I see him next.

I’ve done the stupid thing of googling about chemo after surgery and the return rates for breast cancer within 5 years if you don’t get your chemo within 30 days of surgery. I’m just so hoping he says I have healed well enough to start straight away.

    Hi

I was diagnosed with bc in January, had a mastectomy early March and will start chemotherapy sometime end on May. When I had a telephone consultant with my oncologist she confirmed that I should start chemo at the latest 12 weeks from my surgery. I understand that chemo would not normally start until you have recovered from your operation usually 6 weeks. Please discuss this with your surgeon on your next visit and do not Google bc. Any information you need is available on this site or the nhs website. There is also a wealth of knowledge and different experiences on this site, just ask and someone will reply. You are not alone and you will be supported.

I think Chemo should start within 12 weeks of Surgery if wound is well healed.  Please don't look at Google, it could well be incorrect information.  I made the mistake of searching the Internet for information in the early days and I scared myself so much, look at sites like Cancer Research, Macmillan etc. you could even telephone the Macmillan helpline, I did several times and they were so helpful and understanding. Why don't you speak to your GP about the lump in your groin if you haven't got your next Hospital appointment for 10 days?

Getting a cancer diagnosis is terrifying, I remember being given the diagnosis and starting treatment, I've never been so stressed in my life, but believe me it does get easier with time.  Having a young baby and getting such a diagnosis is even harder, I do hope you have people around you who are able to support you through it.

Take good care and keep us updated, if you would like to.
