Dont know why it has come up that I am a new member as I joined 4 weeks ago!!!

Question on sick pay. I have been on full pay for 3 weeks then 5 weeks of half pay since having my mastcetomy in early march. Due to start chemo end of may and will be on ssp for 28 weeks @ £95 per week. Have been with current employer for over 7 years and never had a day off sick.  Is this correct? It seems my employer is paying the bear minimum as other people I have talked to seemed to get full pay for alot longer than I have. Assume I will have to claim some sort of other benefit after the 28 weeks of ssp. Dont really need financial problems with having bc

  • Hi Lindyloo11 welcome to the forum. 4 weeks ago may make you a relatively new member In the scheme of things.

I wouldnt like to advise as this will depend on what your contract says but if you could give the Macmillan Line a call on 08088080000 they have financial advisors that they could put you in touch with and can then tell you what you can claim and how to access this. .

Best Wishes and hope that you get the answers that you need. xxxxx

  • Hi

Unfortunately your employer sets their own sick pay policy.

Some employers only pay SSP and don't ever top up with pay.

Your SSP will already have started so its 28 weeks in total. Part of the full pay and half pay you are / have received will consist of the SSP.

Your employer should be able to provide you with its policy.

You can make a claim for Employment & Support Allowance from DWP. There's different types based on either National Insurance contributions you have made or the income you have coming into your household.

MacMillan welfare rights should be able to advise you.

    Good luck with your chemo.

Hi I’ve been with my employer for 21 years and only had a couple of weeks of sick in all that time

but being diagnosed with breast cancer in October I’ve been on SSP right from the start (£97 a week I think it is) and it runs out on the 20th of may my employer has sent me a SSP1 form for me to go to DWP

to be honest I’m absolutely appalled by it and I’m debating whether to go back to work for them feel let down to say the least

    Hi

Can tour company not furlough you till the end of june ? I know its nkt along time but 8 weeks pay at 80% is better than ssp !! Its worth asking .

Hope everything works out for you

    Take care

  • Actually....asking to be furloughed is an excellent idea.

My hubby had gone onto zero pay in March (after receiving full pay for 10 weeks and half pay for 12) but then all of a sudden he received nearly his full salary in April.

I queried this with his employer and they confirmed they had furloughed him (and it is allowed in this scenario) so he’s now getting 80% salary for next 3 months.

I was astounded but very grateful.
