Hi I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at the end of jan followed by surgery on 17th feb.. post surgery results revealed one lymph node out of 4 taken was impacted. Onco test carried out with score of 7 meant chemo would give no additional benefit so now have started hormone therapy and midway through radiotherapy. Does anyone know if I am at higher vulnerable risk for covid. I have not received a letter to self isolate. Also I was really surprised to be told by my consultant that he would see me in a year with no follow up before that and I haven’t even finished radiotherapy yet... is that normal? I’m feeling like I’m being rushed through the system with no proper closure.. i also have work asking if I’m planning to start back a couple of weeks after radiotherapy finishes.. although the treatment will be finish the physiological impact feels huge with covid on top and I’m so worried of being back at work full time in a few weeks.

  • I had lumpectomy in July 2015 then radiotherapy in September 2015.  I went sick from biopsy at end May 2015 and in November 2015 did phases return to work and used up my annual leave to work short weeks as your annual leave accrues when off long term sick. Physically I could have worked but mentally I needed to be kind to myself .

I didn't see my surgeon for a year after surgery.  I didn't have chemo so no oncologist

I was working in public sector at the time and had upto 6 months full pay (I took 5) abs 6 months half pay .

  • Hi and a warm welcome to this crazy club (I don’t think I’ve seen you here before). Anxious times..... I don’t think breast radiotherapy is on the list for lowering immunity, but I’d double check with the rads team. And I’d say definitely don’t rush back to work. Some people here have worked throughout their rads but my GP signed me off school till a month after mine finished. You are also entitled to a phased return to work, you don’t need to be thinking that you’ll have to go full time straight away. Do you have a union you can ask for advice? Macmillan have a booklet about your rights as a cancer patient, you are protected by law.

Regarding consultant follow up, each region seems different but I’m sure everyone is meant to have some sort of follow up during rads and about 6 weeks after. I had a consultation with a radiologist about half way through my 3 week course, and then an appointment with the oncology team 10 weeks after. I know things are topsy turvy atm but it definitely sounds a bit ‘casual’ to wait a year before seeing anyone again.

Good luck with the rest of your rads, and do ask there about your immunity and about post rads follow up. Gentle hugs, HFxx
