Hi

Anyone having problem with weight gain and loosing it?

I had mastectomy in October then chemotherapy till end of February. Currently I am on target treatment, Tamaoxfinen and radiotherapy.

Since starting my treatment I put on over 10 kg !!! My breast cancer nurse was saying that it's due to steroids, fluid retention and the fact that I probably move less and eat a bit more.

I started to eat less portion and eat more healthy (less carbs ,no sweets etc). I started to do 30-40 min online exercise 3-4 times a week. My weight doesn't move and I just want to cry! Last time I was that big was when I was pregnant with my son so it make me down a lot. Don't get me wrong it's not about being size 6 but about feeling comfortable in my body.

Did anyone had similar problems with weight gain during treatment and had any success in loosing it after???

While I have a different type of cancer I saw this pop up and thought it was relevant to what I'm experiencing at the moment. Since beginning my steroids back in November I had put on 8kg by early February and started finding my trousers didn't do up, couldn't get my wedding ring on etc.

So I also started looking at what I was eating and started exercising most days as well (well I have to have monthly chemotherapy now that lasts for a week, so don't do much of anything in that week - but have no sickness and my appetite doesn't change either so doesn't effect my weight at all, if anything probably put on weight!). But like you I made some adjustments like easy things, I was having 3-4 cups of tea a day with two and half sugars and 3-4 biscuits with each one which was a lot of calories! So cut that back / swapped to sweeteners as an easy win. And did the same with a lot of other things as I was just care free eating, as I've always been an really active person so eating things was never an issue before. But I must have easily been eating well over 3,000 calories a day!

You don't mention how long you've been exercising or eating healthily for? I've been doing it for about 6 weeks but only lost just over 1kg but that has only really changed in the last 2 weeks, for the 1st 4 weeks it barely moved. In week 2 I was actually heavier than when I started! I can understand now why people give up on diets!

One of the key things to remember though is if you've gone from doing very little exercise to doing quite a bit, is that muscle mass is more dense than fat, so you could be adding muscle and burning fat but actually be putting on weight. So you may be finding that the scales don't move but the muscle toning up underneath is masking any weight loss. So sometimes it's better to focus on how you feel more than anything.

    I wish you luck

  • Thanks for your reply it's nice to know that I am not the only one struggling with weight gain.

After I had my son I was quite big so I started exercising and diet and lost 10kg in 1,5month. Then I continued with gym and cycling my weight was more or less the same  Now with cancer treatment I feel like I am  back to square one. Now it's so difficult to loose anything. I am just 2 weeks into "diet and exercise" so just beginning but I expected to see some little change by now and the scale doesn't move . Maybe I am inpatient..

I feel heavy and big. I don't fit in most clothes. My wedding ring doesn't fit as well.  For cancer prevention it's better as well to be the right weight so I really want to loose some .

Unfortunately there is nothing more I can do I think apart from health eating and exercising.

Best of luck to you too xxx
