Swapping from Letrozole to Tamoxifen?

Hi all,

I’m coming up to 2 years post Mx and already had osteoporosis, so in my discussion with my surgeon today I asked about continuing Letrozole after the 5 year period prescribed. She feels I’m at low risk of recurrence and said the first two years are the most important, and suggested I thought about swapping to Tamoxifen as she says that, rather than depleting bone, it can actually increase it.

i found that interesting and wondered whether anyone has any experience of changing over that way round?

  • Hi , I haven’t but am interested in the question; I’m on Anastrozole and have osteopenia, so I’m very conscious of possible effects on the bones. I’m also not at 2 years yet but interesting that your surgeon said the first 2 years are the most important. I’m kind of resigned to being on these ‘nasty’ tabs for 5-10 years but always open to looking at other options. And of course everyone’s case is different. I’m sure others out there will have experiences and comments. Glad you’ve got another year under your belt! HFxx

  • Hi ,

thanks for replying, I’ve also posted a query to ‘Ask the Expert’ as I would really like to know if there’s a way of sorting and preventing the possibility of recurrence while not being so unkind to my skeleton! I was pleased that she said I wasn’t too at risk, though! Perhaps because the bc was so contained, and she felt it was fully removed?

She said there are a couple of areas of thin skin, though, not just where the tumour was, but also further across the boob where the scar connects two former ones, which gives a flattened area over the implant, she did check me over both sides, and will see me in a year or before if I wish.

    Hope someone else knows something?

  • I’m thinking a swap might be a good idea, having had a careful read and also of the info that the specialist nurse answered my question with.
interesting times.....but will still think carefully and seek more opinions
