I am due start biophosphates next month. Initially this was to be by infusion but I have been prescribed tablets instead. Does anyone know the difference/ benefits / disadvantages of the different methods. The infusion would have been once every 6 months for three years. Where as the tablets are every day with some very specific instructions as to how they must be taken. Thanks.

    Hi

What tablets have you been offered (there are several) ?

Sounds like from your 'specific instructions' comment one could be Alendronic Acid ?

  • Hi

I’m on tablets but I only take one a week .

have you had a full dental checkup ? If not I think you will find that your dentist would want to give you a checkup before you begin with the Bisphosphonates .

I was a bit worried about taking them and I telephoned the MacMillan helpline , it was great to talk to a very knowledgeable person . I have had no problem .

I take on a Tuesday - yip today . So I must be up ( no lying down ) take with large glass of water . Wait 30 mins before eating and I must wait 2hrs from taking the tablet before I have any dairy products ! All to do with the absorption of the tablet and avoiding heartburn . I got my son to read up on them and if you take milk it inhibits / looses the effectiveness.

hate not having my cuppa for two hours - fruit tea isn’t bad though . Ooo and that first late is heaven Grinning

So check that it is daily your getting as anyone I know ( elderly also get them to help their bones ) are on weekly . But there is so many meds out there .

but as I say absolutely no problem for me .
Phone helpline - they are great .

  • Thank you and ,

I have been prescribed Ibandronic Acid and it's a daily tablet which is a bit of a pain. I am sure I'll forget the 'rules' in the busyness of life!!! Not use to taking tablets regularly. Need to getGrinyself sorted. Grin It too has to be taken first thing in the morning with a full glass of water, remain sitting or standing for 60 minutes after and can't eat or drink for half an hour afterwards.

I had a full dental check-up before chemo because I knew this was coming and had a wisdom tooth removed but it is a worry!!!

Glad to hear you've had no problems .

    Hi

Daily Ibandronic Acid (info) is similar to the weekly Alendronic - you do have to be careful as the reasons for all that water etc is the acid can inflame your oesophagus if it happens to get stuck somewhere before reaching the stomach, or not absorbed if it mixes with food.

J was taking the weekly Alendronic for 5 years with no side effects. If you find taking this daily a lot of hassle you could ask if the weekly Alendronic tablet would be just as effective ?

    Take care, G n' J

    Hi

I also take the Ibandronic Acid tablet daily, have been on it for 18 months, not a lot of problems, occasional reflux due to it.

  • Hi,

I take Alendronic Acid weekly and have done so for over 5 years, had mild osteoporosis even before bc.
it causes some indigestion in spite of the half hour with just lots of water, but it’s ok.
