Just after some advice

Hi all.

I feel a bit of a fraud as I haven't been diagnosed with breast cancer. I'm just after some advice if possible from people who know best and that certainly isn't Google.

I've had breast cysts for the last 7 years, everytime I find a new lump I am checked out. The last time I went was about 5 months ago they found 2 on one breast and 2 on the other, they felt bigger as they were close together. Now I've found another just by my nipple which does feel different, I've also had some breast pain and itching which I haven't had before.  I know everyone is different but I guess my question is has anyone has breast cyst before and then later had another lump which was BC. If so did you notice any difference between the lumps? I've been to my GP and I'm on the 2 week referral I'm just waiting for my appointment.

Thank you.

  • Hello ,

you’re doing all the right things in getting checked out each time! Yes I did have cysts in both sides but more in the left in which I eventually, a good few decades later, had cancer. They kept telling me the cysts would stop once I was through the menopause, and yes they did.
Was that related? Who knows? I suspect nobody really does!

please don’t panic, I escaped both bullets of chemo and radiotherapy, just had a mastectomy partly due to the previous surgeries (back then they removed cysts) and partly due to the position.

This is the worst stage, the waiting for your first appointment, but please try not to scare yourself with google, it’s most often inaccurate and out of date. The best places are here and Breast Cancer Care site.

  • Hi Moomy,

Thanks for replying. Firstly I'm glad your doing ok after all you've been through.

I do get checked out each time but this time I've left it for a month as the last time I was at the breast clinic when I had the 4 new cysts the consultant was so rude, she didn't even check my breast, she just put a black marker where i said they were and sent me for an ultrasound. She didn't even see me afterwards, I just had a lovely nurse talk to me in the corridor and just said keep checking for any new changes.

I'm glad your cysts stopped at menopause as when I spoke to the doctor on Monday I asked her if they would stop and she said probably not. I'm 51 and haven't hit menopause yet unless grouchyness is a sign if it Slight smile

I'm hoping I'm just over reacting. I'll let you know the outcome and thanks again xxx

  • Hi ,

As says, you're doing the right thing getting checked out.  I would add to do your best to ignore ignorant consultants and do what you have always done - every time you find a lump- get it checked, any changes - get it checked.  It's much better for it to be nothing sinister than cancer and considering the #be kind and mental health awareness, you'd think consultants would be a lot more considerate!

My oncologist was one of the rudest men I have ever met. Now, when I'm less vulnerable, if I was spoken to like I was then, I'd give him a piece of my mind and hopefully benefit other ladies having to endure his 'bedside manner'.  Just accept that SOME consultants clearly think they are a 'cut above' and perhaps if you ever get that situation again - ask the question "So, do you think I am wasting your time getting checked then? As this goes against all the advice I have ever heard that I should always get them checked if I notice any changes".  The only answer they could have would be "no of course not" because if they said yes, then they would be going against NICE guidelines.  Just because she was in a grumpy mood, she really should never take it out on her most vulnerable patients.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that it is as you think, cysts again.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lesleyhelen.

Thank you for your message. I totally agree with you some can be so rude and others so nice. When I went the time before  last I saw a gentleman and he was so nice. He told me they would do a mammogram once that was done I went into another room for an ultrasound and the consultant in there said why did he give you a mammogram could of just done an ultrasound. I said to her should it not be checked then and the nurse who was in there stepped in and said no you should always get checked which did shut the other lady up. I'm sorry you went through it with your consultant especially when your at your lowest points, is it to much to ask for a bit of understanding and compassion.

I hope you are well and back to good health and hope I'm just being paranoid. I will let you know the outcome.

    Thanks again xx
