Mum's Headaches

Hi All

My wonderful mum beat Breast cancer and has been clear for around a year now. Recently she began to get headaches that just wouldn't shift no matter what she took.

After around 4 weeks of this, she called her cancer support nurse who arranged for her to see the oncologist. There she was asked lots of questions and sent for blood tests and a CT Scan on her upper body. At this point, we all remained positive that this was probably just to rule out anything and a precaution.

The CT scan was around a week ago and mum's follow up appointment is in a few weeks time. Today however, she received a phone call from the hospital asking her to go in for an MRI on her head. This has now made her/me really worried.

Has anyone else had anything like this before? What can an MRI see that a CT scan can't?

Just after some reassurance I think while we wait for the MRI tomorrow and then the results to come in. The wait will seem like forever!

PS - My dad has terminal pancreatic cancer and mum takes care of him. I know how much he is freaking out :(

  • Hi there,

I just noticed your post, and from my experience it's because the MRI scan can give better imaging on soft tissue.  I had CT staging scans last year,  and a 6mm hemangiona was reported. My oncologist was sure that's what it was as well (it was!), but as I was being treated for breast cancer and having chemo she checked.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

That makes me feel a little better - just need to be patient and see what the outcome is

  • Well fingers crossed for your mum. The tests are really stressful! Let us know how she gets on. x

  • , I have just had an MRI head scan, for weird symptoms, and thank goodness it was normal. It shows in tiny detail every structure in the head, much more clearly than a CT. It does not necessarily mean they saw something on the CT, they mayjust be being thorough. I know how you are your mum must be feeling; the waiting is awful. So dorry about your dad too.xx

Hi Everyone, mum had her results consultation today and the good news is that it isn't cancer!

It is a type of benign brain tumour called a meningioma.

I'm so relieved that it's not cancer, but still anxious about the next steps as she may need surgery. Got to wait for a referral to the neurology team now before we know more.

For now at least we can relax a little bit Blush

  • Smile so pleased it isn’t brain secondaries Smile

Obviously you will be worried about possible surgery, which is hard to contemplate after going through cancer. You will both feel better after you have more information from the neurologist. xx
