Hi, I had my first zoledronic infusion on 17 January and have noticed that my eyesight has got very blurry since.

I know that this can be a side effect but my oncologist was not terribly helpful and told me to see my gp.

He (my gp) said that he’d not had anyone who’d had this as a side effect and didn’t know what to suggest, apart from monitoring it.

What I’d like to know is - has anyone else had this blurry vision? And if so did it last long?
I know that everyone is different but anything would be appreciated.

thanks everybody, Sue

hi ...are you also on chemo  ? My blurry vision is a side effect of that !!  Have you tried an optician ? if you get no sense from anyone  please make a fuss , the team are there to help you !!  good luck

  • My eyesight wasn’t blurry but I developed cold sore virus in my eye - probably through being so run down after all my chemo - which can blur your vision depending on where it is. I had to go to eye hospital and get it checked out. After a week or so of eye cream all okay.  My optician has told me that my eyes are a lot drier and gave me a spray to use - much better.

The JR in Oxford has a drop in clinic....maybe your local hospital has the same.

I would recommend going to the optician.

Thank you both so much for your replies.

i had chemo every 3 weeks from August to December last year and my eyes were absolutely fine during that time.

It’s really only been the last couple of weeks that I’ve noticed the blurriness, especially as I’d had my eyes lasered 11yrs ago so my long distance eyesight was fantastic. It’s got worse this past week which was what got me concerned really.

I live in Guernsey which is such a small population and so I guess that’s why this side effect may not have been encountered by the specialists over here. I’m having a blood test next week as a precaution so I’ll see what happens there.

    thanks again, Sue

  • Hi

Hard to say whether Z infusion made my eyes worse .They were already blurred /dry etc due to EC chemo .Then first infusion of Z was added at 4th cycle .In Oct/nov   What I can say is it's seven weeks since last chemo and there is an improvement in eyes and I'm no longer using daily drops .

Ive been advised that sight could have been changed so  to go for eye test now then again in month and If eyes stable get new lenses then .

Either way if Z had added to blurred vision it hasn't lasted long ....will know in May if it happens again ( something else to look forward to lol

  • I had blurry vision from about half way through chemo (EC x 4 then Paclitacel). It did start to improve in the 3 weeks before my first  Zoledronic acid infusion,  but that gave me bad 'flu' thr following day when I couldn't even sit up for water mid- afternoon.  The next day I wad fine,  then a few days later had terrible pains in my right leg when I couldn't stand for more than a few minutes. My eyes were then pink constantly for a few days and my vision would really suddenly blur every so often. I couldn't work out if it was the chemo, or a combination of chemo still in my system,  ZA and Letrozole. Still feel pretty bad with tingly head,  sore back and shoulder on surgery side and pain in my feet.  The doctor told me it could take a few months for thr effects of chemo to clear, and the effects of letrozole to kick in! Everyone responds differently I think,  and I suspect the first ZA is known to be the worst because of the chemo still hanging around.

londonmumof2 , that all sounds pretty scary , hope the next lot of treatment has less effects ….

Seaspirit , sorry to see you have been feeling rubbish since Christmas , feeling you can`t trust your balance is horrible and it seems to have been going a long time …...MRI does sound scary , hopefully it will turn out to be reassuring and as spring comes along you will feel better , and lunch sounds yum

I had another " saga " yesterday , they double booked me to see oncologist to re start chemo , but couldn't fit me in ……..in a team of 3 one dr is on annual leave and another on sick leave after surgery ……….after a lot of phone calls in the afternoon I got hold of a secretary who moved heaven and earth and got me an appointment with another team ,next Tuesday …...so , 4 extra days off chemo ,

    they really are overloaded …….

Going  to a birthday lunch today...…….it is sunny , but I think we are in for a stormy weekend  I have withdrawn from a ramble ! will go to knitting group instead ! Warmer !

Best wishes to everyone as usual , esp Sal and Anjak

    Hi Londonmumof2,

Was looking for info about Zolodronic acid and saw your post.

So grateful if you'd advise -sounds like I'm just starting with the drugs you had 4 x EC then 4x Paclitaxel. Due to have 2nd round of EC on Tuesday plus 1st infusion of Zolodronic. SE's liveable with first time with but seriously worried about Z. Would you mind letting me know when you had your Z infusion? was it early on in your chemo?

    Many thanks XXXX

  • Hi hope you don’t mind me commenting on your post.
I noticed that I had blurred vision towards the end of my chemo 18 months ago, this was when they added the first lot of Z acid infusions. I had my eyes tested and the lenses were very dry and my eyes were continually blood shot. My prescription had changed slightly but the guy referred me to an eye specialist because of staining on my retina. I didn’t buy new glasses at that point just incase the prescription changed again.
The waiting list to be seen here was 8 to 12 months!!l

Anyway I went to a different optician about 3 months ago and he told me that I shouldn’t really of had an eye test so close to chemo because it’s known to cause some problems like dry eye etc so can be misleading. My prescription has now changed quite dramatically and the blurred vision is worse plus the eye lenses are dry so I’m having drops daily to help me and they do definitely help, I get the ones that last for 6 months once opened. I think chemo has an impact for sure but after reading these posts I’m wondering if the ZA is making the problem worse, I’ve got another year to go on it so maybe once it stops the vision issues will improve.
Sorry for the long post. Jacks x
