Full or partial mastectomy help

Hi

i was diagnosed with triple negative bc last September and have been undergoing chemo before surgery. Originally I had no choice over my surgery but as my tumour has reacted so well to chemo have now been offered a choice of a full or partial mastectomy. Can anyone give me any insights into which direction I might want to go in or things I need to think about. I know with the partial I would be offered reconstruction a couple of years down the line but to be honest, I’m not currently bothered about this. I still have the thoughts that if I have a full mastectomy, I will rest a little easier. ( I’ve not read up a lot about triple negative ( I don’t want to know too much ... just take each day as it comes) but of course I’m worried about reoccurrence). Any thoughts??

Just my own experience but I opted for the full mastectomy as just wanted it all gone!! I definitely would have worried about it otherwise. I haven't had reconstruction and I'm really happy with the result. It's a neat scar. I'm actually having the healthy boob removed too to remove any dobt and worry (my boobs are really cysty so it makes it impossible to check properly). Good luck deciding!

  • Hi ,

I wasn’t given a choice, partly due to site and partly due to previous surgeries (they used to remove cysts, and I too was a cyst-y person) and to be honest, I was pleased. If it had cancer I’d rather it gone! But I did want a reconstruction but because of possible long and delayed surgery I opted for an implant which was done at the time, using a permanent implant as my nodes were clear.

Good wishes over your decision; it has to be yours, we can’t do it for you, we can only say how it was for us.

    Hugs xxx
