Can anyone tell me if the cold cap worked for them or did not work for them please?  Does it matter how long your hair is?  Can you speak on the phone whilst wearing one?  For how long before chemo starts and ends do you wear it?

Thank you

  • Hi Focus3,

I used the cold cap for 8  chemo treatments prior to starting the treatment my hair was shoulder length so I had it cut to just below my ears and a few layers instead of all one length. At the end of treatment I still had my hair it was just a bit thinner. 3months after end of chemo On Christmas Eve I had my first hair cut and it felt wonderful it was more of a therapeutic cut than a lot of hair to be cut its thickened my hair up and it feel great. I even got my eyebrow and some eyelashes back for  xmas.

I had to wear cold cap 30 mins prior to treatment then 45mins after treatment but this does vary on type of treatment you have. I had earphones in listening to my favourite music so I'm sure you could use the phone just depends on the environment your in having the treatment.

    all the best !

Hi Focus3 l used the cold cap for 13 chemos & it didn't bother me too much. The worst bit is the first 5 mins as it cools. Feels akin to an icecream brain freeze, but then it goes numb. I didn’t cut my hair because l still wanted to be me & l really hate short hair. I definitely lost more hair than those who cut it short & layered per the instructions. There were 4 of us going through it together & my hair loss was the worst, it could have been random but l think it was my refusal to face the chop.  Advice: take some painkillers before it goes on the first time to take the edge off it, drink hot tea as it cools down, always put conditioner on before (my nurse said not to the 1st time & my hair was really dry after), if there is a machine request it, it’s miles better than individual caps (make sure they turn it on the minute you arrive or it delays chemo), part your hair on the opposite side to normal before you start because your parting gets a bit wider.  All the best to you xx
