Tamoxifen, Sage, Alcohol

One of the most frustrating things I'm finding is the conflicting advice I've been getting.

My surgeon told me to cut out alcohol as it causes my kind of breast cancer (hormone receptor)

While both my Oncologists (medical and clinical) both said they'd prescribe alcohol if they could for women with breast cancer (joking of course).  But essentially said alcohol was ok.

And now I'm getting hot flushes, courtesy of tamoxifen - and some breast care nurses said to take Sage Tablets.  however when I went into Holland & Barrett, the assistant warned me against it and said it interferes with tamoxifen.  Looking at dr Google, it appears again there is conflicting information.

One thing I've noticed though is that if I don't drink, my hot flushes are minimal and very manageable, however if I do have alcohol, they are more extreme, especially at night.

So perhaps I'll take my surgeons advice, and then I won't have the issue with hot flushes!!

Anyone else come across any of these issues?

  • Hi yes my oncologist said alcohol is alright but cancer research UK says any alcohol increases risk of recurrence.

The issue about the Sage some plant sterols mimic oestrogen some schools of thought said it is a good thing because the plant sterols are harmless but then other schools of thought say that anything like estrogen would be harmful so it's an individual choice after reading the research.

I personally I stayed clear of alcohol just having the occasional drink at birthdays or Christmas. Xx
