I have recently been advised by my oncologist to to take a course of Zolondronic acid, intravenously every 6 months for 3 years. I decided to defer my decision for a few months as the really serious side effect of bone death, ONJ really terrified me and I wanted to get a bit more information on this. Its been prescribed for me to reduce the risk of cancer coming back in my bones. I have had a course of chemo, surgery and radiotherapy and also due to start another 14 cycles of Perception and Perjeta. All of this is to lower my risk of recurrence as the tumour has apparently been successfully zapped.
Anyone out there, any experience of zolondronic acid and side effects, or even ONJ. I am agonising about what to do
I have also had two of three of these so far, no side effects have all been given every six weeks whilst on chemo, then will start every six months from now for three years.
as far as I aware this is supposed to help prevent spread to bones.
Hi.... it’s osteoncrosis of the jaw which I was told is bone death of the jaw. My oncologist did say I would need to discuss with my dentist which I did. I was hoping he had had no experience but he has seen several cases and said it’s extremely difficult to treat. He asked me to come back if I decide to have it as I would need XRays.
My oncologist said there was minimal risk of this, and that the advantages outweigh the side effects
Thanks to you both for replying and it’s good to hear you both haven’t had side effects. After looking at statistics it’s 1 in 100 who may get it. Apparently at higher risk if it’s intravenously and if you need an extraction..... I’m probably over stressing about it.
Hi I had first Bisphosphonate infusion in November along with EC no 4,so hard to say if SE were for one or other . Every 6 months for three year .
My Onco checked Vit D levels mine were Vgood at 50 but still prescribed Adcal twice a day to protect bones .
Re Dental work I was advised any treatment should be 6 weeks either side of infusion .

Thanks Margaret... another positive reply.
I believe the drug stays in your bones a while. I am vitamin D deficient but now taking supplements. I’m also taking Letrozole which can thin the bones as well so I guess that would be another good reason to take zolendronic acid
I am due to have the same treatment . I have had lumpectomy and radiotherapy on both breasts . I have osteopenia which is thinning of the bones and the infusion every 6 months will protect any further thinning I hope. My dentist said that antibiotics is given if future teeth extractions are required . My GP said he had never come across anyone having the bone disease from this treatment as it is very rare . GP is experienced GP. It is a worry but I trust the oncologist to make the right decision for me .
Thanks Morkie
When I look at the positives such as the strengthening of the bones then I lean towards taking it but my dentist didn’t appear to be over enthusiastic. I am still waiting for results of my Dexa scan which may swing it if I have osteopenia or osteoporosis. I may call my GP but she is difficult to get hold of.
I would love to hear of your experiences. I’ve 4 hospital appointments this week what with last radiotherapy and physio, bloods and then treatment on Thursday, so perhaps I’m over thinking and I don’t see my oncologist until February
I am due to see oncologist for follow up after radiotherapy finished end of October . I take Omeprazole since having gallbladder removed about 4 years ago so I think the intravenous injection is better for me than the tablets as tablets can cause side effects on stomach . I don’t think anyone wants to have the D acid but it apparently protects the bones from secondary breast cancer and in my case strengthen my thinning bones . I am also on a daily calcium and vitamin D tablet prescribed as I’m on Letrozole . I’ll let you know how I get on on 6 jan . Try not to worry too much about what could happen
