Genetic Testing

Just wondering if most people opt for this if offered. I had genetic counselling yesterday and opted to be tested for BRCA 1, BRCA2 and Lynch Syndrome...due to family history of ovarian, endometrial, colon and lung cancer. They had already looked into my dad's colon cancer and it's not linked. Apparently about 1 in 10 people have the gene and I'll find out in 2 months.

  • Hi

I'm just 'bumping' your post back to the top of the page as I'd noticed it hadn't had any responses.

Hi I am fighting genetic testing as I don’t fit the criteria. My aunt does as she has had bilateral breast cancer and myself with breast cancer. I have been informed that it will take 3  months for results and if positive my mum will have to be tested then if she is positive then I can be tested. I have been informed that all 3 of my children are high risk.

It appears to be one big fight. Good luck

  • Hi,

I pushed for genetic testing several years ago as my maternal aunt sadly died from Ovarian cancer and my mum was treated for DCIS a couple of years afterwards.

They didn’t feel I fitted the criteria at that time due to my aunts cancer being of a non hereditary type. They agreed to review it when I turned 40.  I must say the looks on their faces when I went back at 39 for testing (referred by surgeon) when I told them of my diagnosis was a picture!

However, they were right in the end - I tested negative for all the genetic mutations they are currently aware of that greatly increase the risk of breast cancer.Obviously this was good news for my family and me.

I would however advise to keep on pushing if you want to have the test but to also think of the implications. When I was finally offered the test I wasn’t sure I could go through with it - I was being treated for breast cancer at the time so emotionally was all over the place!

Wishing you all the best xx

  • Hi Feemchg,

How did you get on with this?  I have just been offered a blood test for BRACA 1 and BRACA 2.  Having just recovered from a bilateral mastectomy, the thought of having to possibly have a hysterectomy has thrown me ..   Part of me doesn't want to know the results, but I have 2 daughters so I owe it to them. .....

Has anyone else been in the same sort of postition??

Hi...I got my results a couple of weeks ago...negative thank goodness. I have 3 daughters and a grandaughter so felt I owed it to them...my eldest daughter wanted to know as she has the baby but the other 2 weren't keen. I've already had a full hysterectomy so thought I'd significantly reduced my chances of getting cancer...and even joked about it...then got breast cancer.
