Hello

I've had a breast MRI this morning then have a clip fitting next week,  then oncology then hopefully finally start chemo after the 17th. Still really struggling to get my head around this all.

Has anyone had a change of diagnosis after a breast MRI ?

Xxx

  • Was diagnosis with Stage 3 invasive TNBC in the right breast had a MRI on both breast and they found a DCIS in the left breast, I was due to have a lumpectomy on the right breast on 13th November, but it was cancelled had another MRI biopsy on the 23rd still waiting  for the results and had to see the oncologist on the 27th November and I am starting chemo tomorrow found out today, a bit apprehensive but trying to be positive.

  • I will be thinking about you xxxx

  • Hi

I have been diagnosed grade 2, been offered either lumpectomy or masectomy, if I choose lumpectomy I will have to have a mri so they can get a better picture of my breast.  Mine in non palpable, how was yours please

    Many thanks x

  • Mine was an  invasive ductal carcinoma, it was stage 3, I had a couple of MRi, if you need more information let me know or you want to chat about it you can message me anytime

  • Hi thank you mine is grade 2 can I ask why you had the mri pls.

    Best wishes

    Sharon xx

  • I had the mri so they could plan what type of treatment to give me as the breast tissue was dense in that part of my breast.

  • My treatment is lumpectomy or masectomy rads and meds.  If I choose lumpectomy they have advised I will need mri, any advice pls xx

  • I was thinking of having a lumpectomy when I was diagnosed, but when I had the mri they checked both breast and found a lump in the left breast that wasn't very clear on the mammogram or the ultra sound had a biopsy and that lump was benign, the lump on the right was malignant, I had a course of chemo, then covid happen and my op was moved forward  so opted to have a mastectomy on the right and one lymph node removed to be checked as we went into lock down last year.  I had a lumpectomy a couple of month later to remove the lump on the left and a all my remaining lymph nodes under my right arm. If  you have the lumpectomy they have to put a marker in to know how much tissue to remove.

  • Hi I had a marker put in when I had the vacuum biopsy, do you know any other clinical reasons why they say a mri.  Just feel one hurdle after another and not moving forward and treatment being delayed, I cannot have a lumpectomy unless I have one but surely there has to be clinical reasons or everyone would have one

    Thank you xx

  • Shaz52, I had and MRI so that they could check the actual size and shape of the tumour. The MRI shows more information than mammogram or ultrasound and for me, it showed a larger lump than they originally thought and that it was on my chest wall, which they hadn't seen before. That meant they wanted to give me chemo before surgery to shrink the lump enough to get clear margins.

MRI is a fairly common part of the diagnosis as I understand it. I had dense tissue so hard to see everything without MRI.

It does feel like endless tests but the reason they do them is so they can tailor your treatment to you.

After my MRI I went on to have a CT scan too before starting chemo 7 weeks after I first presented to my GP. That one was to check it hadn't spread (and was the worst one to wait for results!)

If they want you to have an MRI it will be because they need more info. If I hadn't had mine, it would have been lumpectomy and then them realising it was bigger and I would have had to have had a mastectomy and more of my chest muscle taken away. Instead, they realised I needed chemo to shrink it to give the best long term result for me, both medically and cosmetically.

Stick in there, they are doing their best for you.
