Hi everyone I have so far avoided heartburn (I'm on second EC round) but now I have it it wont go away!!! Does anyone have advice as to what to eat/ not to eat!!! Thanks!! xxx
Hello ....are you on lansoprazole or omeprazole to suppress acid production , please tell you team ASAP . Unfortunately reflux seems to go hand in hand with chemo .
i am told gaviscon works , you can buy it in supermarkets .
i live on Rennies !
some people find tomatoes , coffee upsets them , it is trial and error , in the meantime drink as much water as you can .....I was told 2or 3 litres , which I struggled with .
hope you get some better advice later, there are a lot of us in this boat !
Best wishes.
Gaviscon Advance was ther one recommended to me at the hospital as the most effective one. It did the job better than the ordinary one when I was on EC. Hope you feel better soon as it's horrible.
Hi
unfortunately reflux is one of EC little friends good news is that for me it was usually only for about a week ...but we all differ .
I went to GP and was prescribed ex lge bottle of peppermint type but it works . Ask your chemo team they most probably have something in their pharmacy cupboard . lots of people recommend gaviston extra .
With regards what to eat don't think it really matters just make a note of when it worse . I love garlic etc and seem ok with it then something totally bland sets it off . So now I eat what I want and if nesc have some peppermint concoction.lol
As already said persevere with water two > two and half litres to flush EC out of system .
let your team know
best of luck

I was already on Omeprazole once a day before I started chemo but had to up it to twice a day. At bedtime I found liquid antacids much better than tablets...I asked for chemist's own brand Gaviscon...much cheaper and works just as well.
Thanks.. .good tip! Cheaper always good! I think its tomatoes which I'm gutted about as I have them in everything. Hey ho.. more things off the menu!!! Xxx
Hi
It's a real pain (litgerally!) but seems to be par for the course whilst having chemo, and for some people, afterwards as well...
I take Lanzoprazole twice a day (Omeprazole didn't work for me) and I take Gaviscon Advance (not the extra, the advance is only available over the counter or by prescription I think!) for breakthrough pain - it's horrible to take but works really well. It cvomes in aniseed and mint flavours - both are okay taste-wise, but the texture of the liquid is horrid!
I had a period where even with both of those, I was getting horrible pain, so I now take Rqnitidine 150mg twice a day as well - they are prescribed by the GP and are okay to combine with the Lanzoprazole.
As for other things - I often found that night-time was worse, so I jad a small glass of milk, a yoghurt or a pot of custard/rice pudding to try and damp down the acid. Apparently, brown seedy bread and porridge are also good for this. Avoid tomatoes and their derivatives, oranges and coffee and fizzy drinks. Sleep with the head end of the bed propped up and try a sitting position to sleep in. Also, if you sleep on your side, sleeping on the left is better than sleeping on the right - something to do with the position of the stomach and making it less easy for acid to rise!
Hope you get rid of it - it's horrible!
