Hi there,

I'm a 35 year old mum and I'm looking for support after a challenging day. On Monday my GP did a breast examination and referred me to breast clinic today. My symptoms are a lump in breast, inverted nipple and discoloured areola. Plus tenderness under the arm and around the lump.

So at the breast clinic I had an examination, an ultrasound, a mammogram, then another ultrasound with another consultant present for a 2nd opinion. I was told theres a lump but no clear sign of cancer. However I have to take antibiotics for one week then return for a biopsy.

Meantime I'm still worried about lump and have shooting pains up the affected breast. Has anyone had clear scans, but the biopsy is different? Could they suspect cancer if scans don't point to that but they still want to do biopsy? My mind is in overdrive!

  • They must see infection/inflammation hence the antibiotics.  Once this has cleared/reduced they can then see more clearly.  They are being thorough hence they are biopsies the lump.

i was diagnosed 2015 after my first screening. I had no lump so would never have picked it up. I now have yearly mammograms and had a biopsy on good breast last year as they saw something that needed checking but it was fine.

Sadly we can’t express the process and just to be aware if you have a biopsy you might have to wait a week or so for results.

Just to warn you the majority of posters in this forum are those with a BC diagnosis and people undergoing tests and while many do post good news after results they don’t tend to stay around so don’t be alarmed that the majority of respondents will have had a BC diagnosis xx

    Hi Carol

Thanks for replying I'm just anxious why I need a biopsy if scans seem ok. That makes sense to do when inflammation settles down. I hope I haven't posted in the wrong forum or been insensitive posting this. The waiting is difficult for sure!

  • Hi,

Have a look in breast cancer for the under 50's. There is a couple of threads there with people who had good results. Waiting for biopsy and strong feelings.  I also got a lit of supportive messages. The waiting is horrendous no doubt about it. Although certainly possible ,breast cancer is not usually painful. Xxxx

    Hi

You certainly haven't posted in the wrong place - anything goes here, so don't fret about any of that; you have the emotional scanxiety concerns to get your head around at the moment.

The word that jumps out from your message is 'seems' and that just about sums up the possible need for a biopsy next week. They have to be certain that this isn't anything worrying and a biopsy is the one thing that can confirm or rule this out. There are many benign breast conditions that could be causing these symptoms.

Quite a few members here had nothing found on scans, my wifes only symptom was a slightly inverted nipple and she only mentioned that to her gp when in the surgery for something else, but luckily he referred her.

Fingers tightly crossed you dodge this particular bullet, but if your fears are confirmed, we are all here for you Thumbsup

Good luck for next week, G n' J

Thanks for the supportive message folks. On top of this I await surgery for a congenital heart defect so my 'scanxiety' (as you well put it) is through the roof. As suggested above, I'll be sure to check out the under 50's group too.

Wishing you all healing light x

  • we are all glad you found us in your time of need.  The waiting and uncertainty is the worse part of this process. While you may not want a biopsy it will remove any niggling doubt you will have in the future.  The biopsy process is quite painless and does give you a definite answer.  Xx
