3 weeks ago I had mastectomy and snb. Drains removed (very painfully) 5 days later.
I was on morphine 4x daily, codeine 4 x daily and ibuprofen 4 x. Together with anti sickness and beta blockers and senacot
but was feeling fed up of tablets so stopped them on Monday this week. All of them. Tried just paracetamol.
I am in bits. Feel so emotional but in such pain. Have swelling under arm badly and feel like a football is under there but it’s not that bad but it feels it.
I cant raise my arm above my head, I keep getting sloshing, stabbing pain and popping in my chest. I am a wimp and very Squeemish but I don’t think I’m over analysing this.
Should I still be on meds this long?
It sounds like you might have a seroma, which would explain the swelling and the sloshing, and you really need to contact the team as it may need draining. Seromas can really painful as they put pressure on already traumatised finished and nerves.
Is the area reddened and/or warm - if sO, you may be brewing an infection, in which case, you also need to contact the team asap in case you need antibiotics!
I would stay on the painkillers - maybe a medium strength one like paracetamol and codeine (co-codamol) and see if that eases things again. It"'s important to do the exercises that you were given as far as you can, but don't push it beyond the pain - be careful of pushing them too far if you're taking strong painkillers as you might end up doing further damage whilst he pain is being masked!
When I had lung surgery a couple of years ago, the pain management nurse told me that thoracic and breast surgery are two of the most painful that you can have! Therefore, it's not surprising that you stiLL have pain, especially if you do have a seroma.
Please give your team a ring tomorrow and see if you can get it looked at.
Big hugs to you!
Thank you lovely.
I did go back 3 days after my drains were out so basically one week after surgery and the consultant looked at my swelling and said setons but didn’t want to drain so as not to introduce infection. He also didn’t think it was that bad
when I got my results Monday of this week they looked again and said it was ok and no worse.
Its not red or hot. But I don’t feel right. Like I’m coming down with something
xxx
Then definitely get back to the team or to your GP! You know you best, and if you don't feel right, then you probably aren't!
Monday to Friday is definitely enough time for something new to be brewing and you shouldn't be left in so much pain.
Don't feel you're bugging people if you keep contacting them -it's what they're there for...
Another vote for seeking advice from the team. Every member of team I've seen said if I had a problem ( or just a question) they always said call or come in anytime. Easier to sort something before it becomes a bigger issue
