Hi,
I finished my chemo in August. I was fine during my treatment but got neuropathy in hands and feet after I finished my treatment. Hands are still manageable but I feel so much pain, burning sensation, numbness and tingling on my feet. Consultant told me it will go away but it will take months. I read in internet (my mistake) and got scared that most of the time it doesn't go away. my question 1) does it go away? 2) if not completely, does it get better and decrease as the time goes, 3) How many months it will take?, 4) Can I do something about it?
I can't really walk and so unstable feet. I am so eager to come back to normal life.
Please share your experience.
Thank you. Have a good day everyone.
Hi ,
while I don’t have experience of neuropathy myself, our daughter did have quite a lot of neuropathy from her many treatments for her refractory lymphoma.
she decided to take a multi vitamin preparation for a while anyway and her neuropathy has definitely improved over the last few years. Mind you, it might be that she has adapted to any problems she may still have?
I would suggest you ask if there are any deficiencies in your vitamin levels (they aren’t normally checked in standard blood tests) and whether a supplement might help?
hugs xxx

Hi ,
I finished Chemo in April, my neuropathy is better than it was so about 6 months. I also had hand and foot syndrome, which is red hands and feet, followed by blistering and peeling. I lost toenails too.
I still have some numbness in my fingers and I’m not always confident picking things up etc. I’ve avoided hot water. Hubby did most of the washing up.
My feet are more or less completely better. My oncologist told me it can take a very time to go completely.
Give yourself a break, it’s only been 2 months since you finished chemo.
Hope it starts to clear soon x
Hi
Unfortunately this can come on after you finish your chemo sessions - When this occurs it is already too late to have lower doses or protect hands and feet from PN as the damage is already done
It took up to a good 6 months for J to fully recover from the worst of the Peripheral Neuropathy symptoms and 7 years on all she has is 'very' slight numbness in her big toes. As with Beachwalker within 6 months post chemo J also lost finger and toenails but this was more an inconvenience than painful as new nails were already formed underneath, so they just sort of delaminated.
The Peripheral Neuropathy link above takes you to the Mac Managing PN info page. J was taking Meloxicam a NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drug) and Amitriptyline for this until her symptoms eased and together they both helped a lot. The best choice is to see your GP to get something similar to help (there are a lot of options like Gabapentin etc)
Don't forget you already may have the 5 year Prescription Fee Exemption Card so if in England these are all free to cancer patients.
Hope this is of some use and with help your PN eases soon, G n' J
Thank you. Sorry for the late reply. Radiation started so life got busy again. It is good to hear that you are feeling better now. I think things are improving in my case also but very slow.
