hi lovely’s

had my surgery Thursday (mastectomy and snb). I’m so spaced out still that I don’t know what Ive done since then. I’m home and on morphine and other meds. I’m told all went well but they had to fit a drain as had to take so much.

I am severely needle phobic and blood phobic and such a wimp and pathetic that this is causing me more pain and anxiety than anything. Any tips or help? Xxx

  • Hi there,

It's normal to have a drain (or two!) after mastectomy, which is usually in until less than 50ml a day is collected. Could you but it in a little bag so that it's not visible? When are you seeing the nurses and/or surgeon for your drain, wound and dressings to be checked? You could ask about the morphine and painkillers then, as you may not need them or such strong ones.

We all hate the drains by the way. I had my surgery on the day before Good Friday, so a really long holiday weekend, and was sent home that night. On the Friday I managed to forget my bottle, and tugged it so that the tube connection  up near where it has come out separated and lost vacuum! I ended up in A&E worried about infection, but luckily the second nurse I saw worked in a general ward where he dealt with them every day so knew what to do! Hopefully you will have it removed early next week, and can start to feel better after that xxx

  • hi

My op same as yours on profile feel free to read.

As Londonmum said we all hate the drain., but far better than having to go and get the gunk drained or possible infections . I was lucky enough to be given a cotton shoulder bag for drain bottle do didn't really see it unless I deliberately looked for drain level .

Mine was in for five nights and yes I was so glad to get rid .

Spaced out feeling may be hangover from op and clear shortly .If not check if pain relief causing it .

take care believe us you will feel better soon .
