Hello everyone,

I wonder if someone could help me with this..

I am at the moment recovering from a bilateral mastectomy and doing really well in recovery.  This is due, I am sure, - to the fact that I have been walking quite a bit.  It has helped me physically of course, but more than anything it has helped me mentally.  I am by nature, an anxious person, but even if I spend my walk churning over all my concerns, ( of which there are many.. ) - I still feel loads better during the walk and immediately after it.

When I start my chemotherapy, I am really worried that I will not be able to do this.  I am worried that I wont be able to walk and I am worried about the effect this will have on my mental health,   In short, - have any of you who have been through chemo, managed to do a walk most days?  ( I am not talking a hike here, - just a good 2/3 mile stretch)

Thank you for your help and advice.

Sukki. xx

  • Hi Sukki,

I was fortunate enough to avoid a mastectomy but did have a lumpectomy,6 rounds of chemo and radiotherapy.

I managed to get out walking most days throughout all of my treatment and as you have said, I  believe it did wonders for my physical and mental health. The fact that you want to get out is almost hBlushf the battle! Be guided by your body, some days during chemo you may just not feel up to it and that’s ok   Blush
Sometimes, to avoid the negative chatter in my head,  whilst out walking I listened to some podcasts Which really helped me to escape and remember the world outside of a breast cancer diagnosis.
I still walk every day now and even run once a week too.

Wishing you all the very best with your continued recovery and treatment

  • Hi

My story on profile  but I've had third Cycle  of EC today  So even though in hospital for 3.5 hours then went to dentist still managed 3500 steps .

It does depend on what chemo you on and what cycle mine is every three weeks .

I try to get out every day but Listen to your body . At beginning of cycle I might just go to a small shopping centre park car in middle and wander but I can get back to car quickly if I get Fatigue .

At the moment I'm happy when I get back up to 10000 steps in each cycle usually bout week ten days in . If I get more fine If not Also fine

have a look at the walking back to happiness thread

    keep well

  • Hi

We are all different , our chemo cocktails are different . For me personally I found a day in and a day out worked for me . I was on 6 x Dosetaxel but only managed 5 . With Dosetaxel the first week was ok, middle week not so kind , final week getting back to normal .

just listen to your body , if your tired / fatigued , that I would describe as a spongy all over feeling . Then rest , have friends for short visits . Treatment doesn’t last for ever , so just concentrate on taking care of yourself . I have permanent side effects and if I could walk 2 to 3 miles daily I would be delighted . Although on a recent visit to Blackpool I managed 7 miles in a day .

Wishing you well and you are unique, just do what you feel able to . I did jigsaws , great for when you can’t sleep and your mind floats away . Maybe try a new hobby, even knitting squares for blankets , buy crazy colours , this could brighten your day, give you purpose without stress and eventually brighten up an elderly persons day . Charity shops often have jigsaws and balls of wool for sale .

Then look forward to spring and getting to build your new normal .

    Love

  • , I have always walked and find it helps my recovery so well.I walkedafer my mastectomy and lumpectomy, all through the chemo, and the radiotherapy, then after all my bowel ca ops. When on. Chemo I walked in the Peak District. When an inpatient I walked round all the hospital I!m convinced it helped my recovery.Good luck

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

    Hi Ruby Rose

Would you mind if I asked why you onky had 5 docetaxel

I only ask because I've just had my 5th out of 8,  I reacted to the 1st dose and they reduced it to 85%,  I'm doing ok on it but my shoulders and neck itch unbelievably badly

Just wondered it you had bad side effects
