Hi all,

Just wondering has anyone had a sensitive/sore scalp whilst losing their hair. My scalp is very pink and sensitive in patches. My skin is also becoming very dry particularly on my hands and face. If so any recommendations on what to put on it.

Thank you

  • Hi

My scalp was very sore just before it started to shed .If I was out in the wind my hair hurt Sob.

Once the shedding eased then so did the pain scalp just slightly tender now , I haven't had any pink patches . I did not handle my hair much at all only finger drying and shaping . No heat on it very little product of any kind . I now use Nioxin hair Therapy for thinning hair on wisps that are left lol ,as recommended by hairdresser .

I was lucky chemo nurse told me straight away about dry skin . I already used Vaseline  intensive care creams on body, neck ,arm .leg  & feet .Also use Their hand and nail cream . Have continued to use these they are non greasy .

They also told me about Dove shower / bath Creme  0% Parabens you can get unperfumed .I use E45 anywhere near masectomy site .

My skin is fine only time it was dry was when I was in flat spin at beginning of all this and was getting lazy looking after skin .

Might be trial and error til you find what suits you I was told and read on here about  0% Parabens ( parabens bad for cancer apparently)

    Thank you Margaret,

I was not informed about dry skin, nor a sore scalp. It has only Been today that these side effects have occurred. It is not great that yourself and others have suffered but the advice and experience is greatly appreciated and I'm sure others will agree, so a massive thank you and I will take your advice and try the the creams and shower gel tomorrow.

    Take care

  • The only other thing I would add  is I really don't think there is any need to spend  a fortune on creams . The Vaseline intensive comes in three types I use the one in white bottle . I usually but it in somewhere like Wilkinsons or Morrisons .Also drink litres of water and juices whilst on chemo as your whole system dehydrates .

    good luck with scalp .

  • Margaret is right here......you don't need to spend more than you would normally have  done on paraben free products or alcohol free ones because nowadays almost all the main brands do at least one and some it's just their normal ingredients.  Do they work in preventing recurrence? I have no idea......but I thought.....as it's so easy to buy them and no more expensive.....I would just use them anyway. That way, if it is a recognised factor, I'm covered and if not......well, I would have needed shampoo, conditioner and deodorant anyway.....

When I was diagnosed in 2015, paraben free, was quite new. Lots of people were buying very expensive products online and from the chemist. ( More than £20 a shampoo!) There was no way I could be that extravagant but then I noticed Timotei and Dove were just introducing them into the supermarkets. I think, chatting on here at the time, they launched them in France first.

One thing the beautician at my first chemo session did tell me though was not to use baby hair products as they contain something for the babies scalp which is not so good for ours. She also suggested using Almond oil or Argan oil on the scalp once a week. I wouldn't have bought it....but a friend had given me a bottle the previous birthday which was unopened so I did use it.

Don't forget with the evo nail to buy acetone free remover. The regime my beautician ( sounds terribly posh....it was an extra provided by my chemo unit for well being...)instructed was to start Day 1, twice a day for six, remove on seventh,  oil with argan oil, start again and repeat this until way after radiotherapy finished as well as chemo. I did do this and kept both hand and toe nails. Coincidence...? Of course it might have been but it didn't really cause much problem to do it and if it was the reason I kept them.....well, I would do it again!

Hope all goes well for you. I am being nagged to go out now....

    Love Karen
