Hello lovely people, and Welcome to the October Chemotherapy Chat! I cant believe how these months are rolling round, I hope October is as easy a month as possible for you all.

This thread is for all of you soldiers, going through chemotherapy to take a look at, ask questions, answer questions and be there for one another in a way only you guys know how.

If you want to find this post quickly, you can hit the 'Save In My Favourites' button.

For all of those of you going through chemotherapy, you are superstars. You are amazing, and you are fighting each and every day, you are my heroes. If you need any extra tips, our Chemo Tips Page is something you may find very helpful, and something that you may find you would like to share with others who are also going through chemo. One top tip, ask about parking at the hospital you are being treated at; for some Cancer patients parking is either free or discounted (big discount!) So it's worth asking about.

To get a sense of how the thread works, here is a link to Septembers chat  which will be being locked from replies soon, but have a read anyway if you'd like to.

Remember, you're never alone, you have us! And, just try to focus on what your chemotherapy is doing. Its hopefully kicking your cancers butt.

I hope you are coping with me doing these! And I hope all of you are doing as well as you can do while going through this tough part of your journies.

Happy October Everyone,

Lots of love, hugs, light and healing to each and every one of you.

Alex xxx

yes, it's done! I actually really like it and I wish I had done it years ago (I went for a very short bob a la Lady Mary in Downton). Such a shame that i probably won't have much time to appreciate it. Still, since I told the girls that I will lose my hair they have been absolutely fascinated by the concept, so at least it is going to keep someone entertained... (they seemed positively disappointed this morning when I got them up and it was still there!).

thank you for all the advice! It's a relief to know that the doctors can do something even if side effects do happen. I can't do the cold cap though unfortunately, it's not allowed for NHL...

Hope everyone is doing ok this evening xxx

  • glad you like your cut  I was the same when I went Pixie .Wished I'd done it years ago so hit my wig same as short cut lol

The kids will be fine with it all they're so resilient at that age just curious about everything .

  • Glad you like your new hair cut. I did the same with mine. Might go a bit shorter again when it starts to fall out!!! Bought some lovely beanie hats from Amazon for when that happens!!! But want to sort out a wig as well. Trying to get things sorted at home before chemo starts and want to get some food cooked and frozen for those days when I don't feel like cooking.

glad to hear you are managing the sickness now. Also thanks for saying you got the Evonail in Amazon. I have been looking for it and couldn't find it in the shops.  How strange is this - I have bitten my nails all my life and yet when this lot started I stopped biting them!!! They look lovely now so I don t want to lose them!!!!

Can I ask if anyone has any dietary advice for vegetarians? Obviously I can have the bone broth - are there any alternatives?

Hope everyone has a peaceful night.

Hi everyone on the Chemo thread,

i hope everyone is doing well.

I had my 2nd taxol of 9 today. Did my usual routine - little cry on the way to the appt then pulled up my big girl pants and put my game face on when I got to my Cancer care centre - then it all fell apart when the nurse couldn’t get the cannula in and had to take it out.

Another nurse got one in for me and they were so good with me, but I had already fell into floods of tears by then. I was ok after, but I’m terrified about next week now - we have talked about a port and we have discussed it on here, but I really don’t want to go down that route. I feel like such a baby I got so upset and every time I think about next week now I start to cry.

Sorry for being Nelly negative, but I just needed to write this down to try to get rid of the negative thoughts and move on. I only have 7 left now so should be glass half full thinking of the positives, but I can’t seem to shake it off. Is this just me?

  • poor you! I'm sure that the nurses supported you when you were upset.  I burst into tears the week before my 4th EC chemo on the actual day i was meant to have it as I didn't feel well, despite my bloods being OK. The nurse pulled the curtain round me for, privacy. gave me  tissues, rearranged for 6 days later,  contacted my consultant and had my breast nurse come and reassure me.  They must have that quite regularly I think. Just like when I'm in clinic waiting is sometimes see a newly diagnosed woman in tears.

I hope that you have minimal side effects this cycle,  nearly there! X

    Morning ladies

Just laid here waiting for granddaughter to stir. She likes 6  o clock at our house. She manages 8 at home!

I was reading about you buying bone broth on Amazon, and I was curious. I'd added the root veg to our shopping list today as I thought it was time to be making soup. There are loads of recipies on Google and as our butcher gives the bones away for nothing £27 seems a bit steep. There must definitely be a magic ingredient in it. Gold leaf I would suggest.

My personal bone food is oxtail. I find it frustrating that I have to strip the bones for the meat. Hubby hates picking bones, and to be honest pound for pound fillet steak is probably cheaper. However the resulting gravy and stew base is second to none. Perfect for slow cookers. I do the meat and freeze with its liquid then add the veg and dumplings later. It takes up less space in the freezer and its pretty quick when you come in from work.

So that's my day sorted, a walk down to the local farm shop.

    Have a good day all.

  • Good morning Silverberg .....

Your granddaughter is going to keep you busy with a 6.0a.m start......

We have had an start too because we're going to go home today.....my husband's having difficulties with his diabetic control. It happens on holidays because his metabolism slows down too much. He has had plenty of rest here and we have been so lucky with the weather that you couldn't help but be relaxed but now he needs his workshop and a few garden jobs to keep his sugar levels down. It's another glorious sunrise and even yesterday which started very overcast had cleared by 09.00......We were going home on Sunday anyway but we will have a longer journey today as the traffic will be heavier. I think we may go home to rain.

Hope you start to get over your sickness Guiliella......

Northerner I hope you continue to avoid the side effects. You're doing so well.

Love to everyone else. Londonlass I see you were straight back into the appointment roundabout. Is the acupuncture helping? They tried it for my leg but it didn't work.....

Have a good day to all.

    Love Karen

  • Hello, don't worry, I'm just the same as you and at 66 feel such a baby, but we can't help our emotions, can we?  At my first treatment this Tuesday I lost it temporarily when I got into the unit.  I feel so out of control and wishing this roundabout would stop, but I've still got such a long way to go.  Last Xmas was spoilt not being able to decorate due to having just had that room done, then waiting for the man to fit new drawers and doors in the kitchen right after Xmas meant the lounge being piled up with stuff out of the kitchen cupboards, that I'd planned on doing Xmas properly this year and now, that's not happening either, as I feel too ill to be able to do it all, getting into the loft and dragging stuff down, so I'm feeling miserable over this and the fact that this dratted cancer came back when we thought it was gone for good.  Bummer.  It also looks like I've got an appointment for Boxing Day, oh joy!  That will mean a taxi there at £15 and another back.  Seems like we will have to get a taxi to my appointment next Tueday at this rate too, so really going to be expensive.

had to phone for advice at 5.00am today, felt so rough I didn't know where to put myself, sit up or lie down.  Advice was to take one of my anti sickness early and phone my doctor for some different ones today at my GP surgery.  Hubby will have to fetch them by bus, if he can get them for today after shopping for food on the bus, it's raining really bad here too.  Feeling slightly better, but not good.

Hope everyone else is okay?  Don't know when I'll feel up to going out and getting my long hair cut off, hopefully for the Princess Trust, but we will see.  Thought I'd go for a pixie cut, as won't keep it for long I suppose.

    Regards, Giuliella.
  • I would normally make my own bone broth, but feel so ill I'm not able to do anything at the moment, much less figure out how to boil bones for hours and my pressure cooker is on the blink, hence paying up and looking big, as the lady in the newsagents used to say.  It's from Australian grass fed cows and in powder form, so should last a long time anyway and I can just put a teaspoon in a cup with boiling water whenever I want some.  Hope I like it now.

someone asked about drinking green tea, they said no, as for black tea, I'm having half a cup first thing in the morning and half a cup in the evening, then trying out fizzy drinks or water through the day.  Diet Coke seems to be the best so far.

    Regards, Giuliella.
