Hi All,

Hope you don't mind me posting here but I am looking for advice. My mum has been diagnosed with a grade 3, 35 mm breast cancer tumour, we don't know about spread yet. We are going back to see the surgeon this week to find out next steps but they have already indicated she will likely need chemo before surgery so the journey is about to begin.

What I wanted to ask to anyone who has gone through this is there anything you can share in terms of advice that you wish you'd known about or done before starting treatment. I'm trying to focus on the practical things I can do to help her feel the best she can before the process starts - random things like she's really worried about losing her eyebrows so have found someone who will microblade them for her. I know that probably doesn't seem important in the scheme of things but I can't take what is about to happen away but I can try and do whatever I can to make her feel confident and strong in herself.

Any advice, ideas or 'wish I had knowns' would be massively appreciated

x

  • My take-always so far (day 7 post 1st EC chemo) are
    - there will be good days & bad days, do what you can when you can.
-I enjoyed setting up a what's app page with close friends & family to update them, share funny stories, arrange who was going to be my cancer slave & when (re chemo sessions etc.) & generally garner sympathy
    - don't have a pizza the night after chemo...
    - take all anti sickness & steroid drugs given at the right time, I did and was not sick at all
    - Let your family/friends know what you want & when as they're generally rubbish at guessing (in my case), be selfish as its you who's going through this & they care about YOU
    - Don't get too caught up about immunity (i.e. don't take temperature every hour) but be watchful for things that may not agree with you
    - use the resources that are available to you, I've called breast cancer nurses and MacMillan support line a number of times and nothing is ever too much trouble
-Take on board other people's stories but remember they are not YOU and you may behave quite differently on your journey

And most importantly for me - try & retain a sense of humour, have as much fun as you can and don't let it diminish too much your enthusiasm & lust for life!

On a practical front I would also have a look at September chemotherapy chat, in particular the "chemo tips page" which will help.

Good luck to you & your Mum X

My secret? Being daft & staying positive.
  • Hi

My story on profile but 10 weeks after surgery and day 15 of first chemo cycle .

one of the things I didn't realise was chemo could damage nails so L think a bit of pampering might be good i.e. Pedicure and manicure .

Mum could switch now to a parable s free moisturising bath / shower cream ..dove do one . So skin not dry to start with . If you look on the first page of September Chemo within the wecome there is a link to a list of things that people find useful whilst getting treatment .

I used a cloth shopping bag with things i.e. Fan,sweets magazine etc,etc call it my chemo bag .

If she due dental check perhaps get it done prior to treatment start ( checking ok to have treatment  ) .

I knew that the chemo I'm on would mean high possibility  losing hair . So took control and had a pixie cut so not too big a shock .worked out well myself and family prefer the short cut so have got a short wig ready .

It is all personal choice but well done you for forward planning . I'm the same feel better when I decide when and what.

Just remember everyone different and your mums needs could change day by day .

    Take care x

One step at a time and ...Breathe !
