Hi folks,

Warm wishes to you all whatever stage of BC you are going through.

Following surgery and treatment for BC, I'm now happily hoping to take the odd trip abroad again.  I've started looking into travel insurance and have been recommended Insurancewith, free spirit, world first, insurepink, allcleartravel, axa.  I wondered if anyone has had good experiences / good quotes with any of these?  For me, it's just travel to Europe.

Do people generally feel ok to fly after BC treatment?  I feel generally well, just some achey bones and bit of numbness in hands and fingers particularly when waking in the morning.  This is due to the side effects of hormonal treatment I believe.  If I did fly, it would be short haul only.

Thanks for any thoughts / advice.

  • Hi

I'm not a member of this group but your subject title caught my eye.

You may not be aware that there is a travel insurance group on this site where members give their recommendations for travel insurance. Clicking on the link I've created will take you there.

Once you've joined you could post your request for help or look for the thread called 'recommended travel insurance' (it's usually on the first page) as it's where we try to keep all the recommendations in one place.

It's best to phone the travel companies rather than do online quotes. Make sure you have all the information to hand about your diagnosis and treatment before contacting the insurers. This is a list of common questions that insurers might ask when you're applying for insurance.

Some insurers will ask for a letter from your doctor to prove that they have given you permission to travel. In any case it's always best to make sure that the doctor says that it's okay to travel and that this has been recorded in your notes in case of a claim.

I hope you get some reasonably priced travel insurance and that you have a great holiday

  • Hi , i’ve recently flown for the first time since having BC treatment which started with lumpectomy, wide local excision and lymph node sampling last October, then radiotherapy in January. I’m on anastrozole since December. No chemo. I have lympheodema in my left breast which I ‘treat’ with Nordic walking and occasional swimming (should do more). I was paranoid about everything to do with the holiday - insurance, aggravation of the lympheodema on the flight, mozzie bites etc. But I survived and came back fine!

Insurance - my husband has family cover through his bank account, he told them about the BC and they added an extra premium, can’t remember the amount but it wasn’t huge. Flight - it was long haul as this was a special joint 60th celebration so long planned Bali trip - I followed the lympheodema nurse’s tips re drinking lots so I had to go to the loo several times, ensuring that I was never sitting for too long! Also stretched my arms and legs regularly, did the best exercises I could in the restricted space available. Bites - I took enough DEET to treat a family of 6 for a month ((for 2 people for 2 weeks) but ended up mainly using a non-DEET repellent and just covered up. I wore loose cotton long trousers and loose cotton long sleeved shirts, saved lots on sun cream! I also took daily antihistamine so that if I was bitten I wouldn’t scratch. Loratadine is apparently ok with anastrozole, I checked with the pharmacist before going. It worked a treat for the 3 bites I did get (not on bad side), I usually get a horrible reaction and very itchy.

So, I won’t pretend that it wasn’t a worry, I was ridiculously anxious about everything in the build up, but managed to have a fabulous holiday in the end. The lympheodema association also have info re flying. Good luck and enjoy wherever you decide to go! HFxx

  • My hubby and I have a packaged bank account with nationwide .  We pay £13 a month and it includes world wide travel insurance for us both, plus breakdown cover and mobile phone insurance.

We have to declare medical conditions but only had to pay a £17 supplement in July until we renew our declarations in October.  Actually told my bank to not declare change until we booked as you pay a pro rats supplement.

We never had charge before but as my husband had surgery  a few months ago and is still having physio for a broken back & neck 18 months ago it triggered it took us over limit offers conditions covered .

As a joint account the breakdown cover fully covered two cars and two motorbikes !

  • Thank you .  Great to get all your tips as I also have lymphodema and also treat with swimming, walking and the like but do worry about insect bites especially when abroad.   Great to hear you had a fab holiday in Bali and good to know about the necessary precautions to take.

Thank you everyone else who also responded about the travel insurance recommendations.  Very helpful.

    With warm wishes...
