Hi everyone,
I'm starting 6 months of chemo on Thursday and feeling very anxious and scared.
Weekly for 12 weeks and then 3 weekly for 12 weeks followed by radiotherapy.
I live alone and my grown up children don't live near me. I have good friends around but no one in the house with me.
I'm most worried about the side effects and living alone and having to call an ambulance if my temperature goes up etc with the dangers of getting an infection.
I'd be so grateful for any help and advice.
Thank you
hello …...lots of people will be along soon to tell you most of us felt like that !
I live alone too …...chemo very little problem felt a bit tired on and off ,but went on with all daily activities !
You might find it is easier than your fears , although some people do have it rough .
Apart from washing your hands a lot , make sure you are " cleaning " things you might not have thought of ...
car keys , light switches , door knobs ,keyboards , etc etc
Have you got a friend who could save you from calling an ambulance ?
Keep reading the site and keep away from Dr Google ! very best wishes …..
Hi
I can't help personally as I didn't need chemo. but the monthly chemotherapy thread may help a little? There is a new one started each month, so you can keep in touch with other ladies who are going through the experience at the same time as you, but maybe have a read of this month's thread to get some useful tips in the meantime.
I sincerely hope everything goes really smoothly for you and you have no issues with it!
Kindest wishes,
I just put a post on as I start chemo Thursday too. I am also worried about infection. I’m hoping to still go to work for a few days a week, I don’t know how that’ll go (maybe unrealistic but it’s my thinking for now) I took some advice about cleaning stuff, I blitzed my house - wiped everything with anti bac wipes at weekend. I guess we can only plan and see what happens. I also packed a ‘go bag’ in case I need to go to hospital.
Good luck Thursday x
Hi Holbox123
Thank you so much for your reply and good luck for Thursday too. It would be amazing if we were together! I'm in Cornwall, where are you?
Yes, my biggest fear is the side effects and living alone. I've made lots of lists and packed a bag with nice things for tomorrow including a blanket and my slippers :-)

Hi Lesley
Thank you so much for your lovely reply.
Yes, I've already looked at July's chemo thread and found it really helpful, especially the tips.
Glad you didn't need to have chemo, it's the side effects and living alone that I'm most anxious about.
Hope all's well with you and your treatment and that recovering well.
xx
Hi puzzler
Thank you so much for your lovely reply. I guess it depends on what chemo cocktail we're given as to the side effects. What were you given?
Thank you for the cleaning tips. I washed my car keys today!
I have asked a close neighbour about taking me to hospital in the night and she was fine with that.
Glad you sound like you're doing well and I hope you are recovering well.
Best wishes
xx
Hi Little Oak, I’m in Warrington, you are so lucky to be in Cornwall, what a lovely place to start your recovery. I think we have similar worries - good luck and let me know how you get on xxx don’t feel alone though, add me as a friend, we can be long distance chemo buddies xxx
Hiya,
Just wanted to say that chemo was nowhere even close to being as bad as I expected! Just be kind to yourself. It is completely do-able. There are lots of medications for side effects so let your team know if you need them.
Cwtches,
Gay xxx
