i am due to start chemo next week but my appt with the cancer nurses is only the day before. Can someone please give me some advice re a wig I feel like I should get one sorted before treatment starts just incase I lose my hair straight away, but I have no idea where to start. I live in the Wigan area.

I am also undecided about the cold cap as I have migraines, I’m also concerned that it will make the treatment session longer. Can anyone please let me have their thoughts please xxx

Hi , it's unlikely that your hair will fall out straight away. I have had two cycles of FEC so far, both with the cold cap, and started to shed a bit of hair in the third week after my first session. However, I still have most of it and can currently get away with wearing a bandana (it's quite thin at the back). I have had no problems with headaches or migraines whilst wearing the cold cap. Your chemo nurses will refer you for a wig fitting if that is what you would like. They sort it all out for you. Give them a ring if you need to be sure that they have you in the system. Good luck with it all.

    Hey!

I used the cold cap for my first session, it was uncomfortable and a bit painful, my head felt tight and pressured but I persisted in the hope my hair would remain. Sadly within a week to 10 days my hair began to fall out and I decided to stop behaving like a dandelion and go for the clippers. I can’t advise on a wig as I’ve just gone au natural, my hair was short before and I decided it’s for others to care about my hair and for me to be comfortable Grinning

    best of luck x

  • Hi

Once I had a date for my chemo to start I went to see about a wig.  For me I wanted to have it before my hair started to go.  At my pre chemo assessment they gave me info about nhs voucher for wig and a list of places I could go.  I live in Scotland so appreciate it may differ from area to area.  Because I had mine before I lost my hair the hairdresser cut it and styled in to look like my own hair which was what I felt most comfortable with.  It looks great and most people wouldn’t know.  Chemo finished end of February but still wearing it as hair not quite long enough yet!. I did try the cold cap but unfortunately didn’t work for me as hair started to go just before 2nd cycle.  Don’t be put off with that though as other people have had success using it.

    Good luck with your treatment.

  • Hi ,

I was advised to go for an appointment before chemo started that way the wonderful ladies who work in the shop can see what your hair looks like so they can match you with a similar colour and style if that is what you want.

Some ppl go for a completely different colour and style it’s obviously up to you.

I got the most fabulous wig. I knew straight way I didn’t want to ‘Feel like a cancer patient’ which I thought the scarves and turbans would make me look like. Some ppl love them and swear by them, it just wasn't for me.

I love wig, my trusty side kick since about February! I never leave the house without it. My friends and some of my family did t even know at first it was a wig.

Have a look at the post Our Wonderful Wigs, I’m sure you can find it if you use the search box. My phone won’t let my upload a photo atm but I’m in that post somewhere.

I suffered with Migraines for years, my tumour was Hormone driven so stopped taking the pill upon diagnosis and have t had one since.

I cold capped the first three chemo’s and my hair was really thick but after the second chemo it really started coming out and after the third one I had a bald patch on top so I stopped using it. The first 10 to 15 minutes are no fun, it does feel very uncomfortable but after that it’s tolerable.

It is really very much a personal choice I’m glad I gave it a go but I was in and out in about 2 hrs when I stopped using it.

Let us know how you get on x

Hiya first we have all been stress messes sometime through out all this poopiness so don't be so hard on yourself.

My hair didn't start falling out until 13 days after my first chemotherapy (FEC-T) and even then it looked like lots was falling out but it only got thinner and i didn't have any bald patches. It wasn't until my second treatment that it really started falling out. I didn't use the cold cap.

I didn't want a wig because i thought i would look like i had cancer, bit ironic really, but a couple of ladies sent me photos of what they looked like in theirs and i soon changed my mind. There is a post called Our Wonderful Wigs where there a lots of photos of us in our wigs, you can see how amazing they look. It helped put my mind at rest and i went out and bought one.

You may be able to get a voucher towards the cost from the hospital and they will also be able to give you numbers of places that do them.

You will feel much better once treatment starts, i felt more in control because i knew what was happening and when.

Go say hello in the July Chemotherapy Chat group you will meet people who are going through the same as you as well as people who have been through it. It makes it so much easier when you have people to talk to who totally understand.

    Take Care xx

  • I used the cold cap and I saved enough hair to not have to wear a wig it was uncomfortable but Bearable. Cap must fit well and hair washing must be minimal  sleep on a silk pillowcase if possible. I used a silk blouse x
