Hi, I am new to the group and online community’s in general. I am had a lumpectomy at the end of June and I am now waiting for radiotherapy. I am trying to do the arm exercises but not sure if my movement is enough for radiotherapy yet!
Hello Ness,
Hope you are recovering well from the lumpectomy? I expect you will have an appointment soon to discuss your continued treatment. However, in the mean time, all exercise is good. Don't worry about not doing enough if what you are doing feels right and if it's what you have been told to do.. It would be worse to overdo it. Did you have a sentinel node removed at the same time as the lumpectomy? Is that why your arm feels stiff perhaps? It's unlikely to effect the start of radiotherapy, I think. Someone who has gone from lumpectomy to radiotherapy will probably answer you soon. I'm afraid I'm not much help there as I had chemo for several months in between.......only to wish you well as you continue your treatments.
Love Karen
Hi. I had Lumpectomy two years ago found a lump in April and had the operation in June, I wasn’ Very sore just wanted the drain out but did do my excercises every day. I had Radiotheraphy in the September 15 sessions they do give you quite a long break after Lumpectomy so you can recover and healing has taken place. Don’t worry about Radiotheraphy it’s okmake sure you cream twice a day and do your excercises. Good luck.
Hi Ness
I had mine lump done 4 weeks ago. I go for assessment on August 16th after my hols.
The radiotherapy is like an x Ray but it takes longer minutes and seconds only.
I have my had radio therapy this time but I had it 12 years ago. Ground hog day for me.
You have to be able to get your arm up over your head. Imagine lying on your back and resting your head on your hands. How hard this is for you depends on how many nodes they took and how loose you are in the shoulders. The elbow needs to be as flat to the floor as possible. If you havent got this range of movement they might struggle to get you in the right position.
Do the exercises little and often, Sat on the loo, waiting for kettle. My arm is still a bit tight ,the old one and I notice it at yoga. The new site has less node involvement and its loosening up well.
Have you had assessment? They will tell you more.
Off to works fuddle now. I'll watch for your reply.
I didn't have to have my arm flat. It was in sort of stirrups up around my head but not totally flat. I found taking some painkillers an hour before helped with the discomfort. My RT was 20 weeks after mastectomy with full axillary clearance. So long due to healing issues.
Hi Silverberg,
My shoulder was tight before because I always overloaded my handbag on this side! I had 2 nodes removed and the operation was done from the side. Radiotherapy doesn’t sound too bad then. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Is yoga helpful after treatment?
Thank you
Ness
Hi AnnJac,
That makes me a little less nervous. Thank you
Hi
I started yoga about five years ago. I had a bad back and I have arthritis. It helps to keep you supple. I no longer have a bad back, the yoga cured it. I'd recommend yoga to anyone BC or not. It's just in some of the stretches I notice the tightness. There was a difference between the two sides.
