Sorry about your diagnosis but glad you found this forum.  I was a 38G when diagnosed and offered a breast reduction.  I was given a week or so to think about.  I decided against but by the time I saw my surgeon a week later she had also decided against as she felt cosmetically I could have a good result and not he lopsided by a lumpectomy.  After my surgery o er the next 12 months I lost two stone do my breasts reduced naturally.

i decided against bilateral reduction as I didn’t want unnecessary surgery, perhaps partly because I’m a wimp!!!

Hey and welcome to the community, although I'm sorry for the reason you find yourself here. I'm so sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. 

In this case, I do think that although there are pros and cons to this decision, only you know what is best for you. For example, if you dont tolerate pain well, or dont want to be having a bigger surgery that could end up taking a while to heal, then a lumpectomy may be  better for you. But, if you are unsure about a lumpectomy, doubtful it will be enough (like my mum was with her surgery) and want peace of mind, then maybe the bust reduction would be better for you. Whatever your decision, it will be the one best for you, and as long as you have found out enough information to make a decision, then that's all that matters. One thing I will say, is that my mum had a quadrantectomy, where they removed a quarter of her effected breast, and reconstructed, and they also did the same with her other breast so she wouldn't be wonky etc. So dont worry about the aesthetics of the procedure, these are things your surgeon will speak to you about, and whom you can find out more information from. 

It may also be a good idea to contact your Breast Vare Nurses, as they can provide you with more insight into both procedures, and can do so with the knowledge of your cancer, so can give you the best advice, relevant to you. I'm sure some other ladies will be along with some of their own experiences to share with you, which I hope will help. I hope this helps you, and no matter what decision you make, you'll always have us here to talk to, and to listen to you, so please keep us updated about your progress.

Hi Grogg thanks for reply I’m 42JJ bust reduction is something I’ve enquired about via my gp n been referred only to be told I needed to lose about 4stone before they would do it! Ido suffer back pains n not sure if it’s weight of boobs lol....... So the idea of losing some of my boobs doesn’t worry me. I want to be healthy n cancer free. Whenever I’ve lost weight in past it never goes from my boobs unfortunately

Thanks Alex for the message I know it’s my decision n that’s what hubby has told me too but just wanted to see if anyone else had gone through either op..... I saw breast care nurse on Friday n will see her again next week when see consultant. Got all the leaflets n been looking online. Spoke to friend who is going through reconstruction at moment...... 

Think I've made my decision anyway xx

My mum had reconstruction surgery, and although shes had quite a few issues regarding healing of the wounds, shes happy with the results of it, and the way her breasts still look. 

Either way, whatever decision you make, you'll still be beautiful, inside and out. 

I hope your meetings with your consultant etc go well, and hopefully you'll have a surgery date soon, something to get down to and over with, so a massive part of your journey is complete. Let us know how you get on, and remember you'll always have us here for you.
