Hello have any of you had experience with being eligible and being offered bone strengthening injections every six months for the next few years? My mum is going through chemo for primary breast cancer stage 3 and will be getting this in addition to her chemo and radiation. Thank you

Yes I have zoledronic acid (Zometa) infusions every 6 months - had 4 so far.  It’s an infusion rather than an injection.  Takes a couple of hours from start to finish.  I haven’t experienced any side effects at all, although some people report flu-like symptoms for a couple of days afterwards.

  • Hi there ,

I was offered the infusion every six months. I’m pretty sure I’m not going to have them though. I’ve suffered with my jaw in the past so it’s not advised.

  • I've had 5 of 6, and felt achy for a couple of days after. Otherwise fine.

As long as you have no major dental issues, it should be fine. They always make sure I've had a checkup with the dentist before my infusion.

I am having them. I have to see my dentist three monthly to keep ahead of any dental issues, but so far no problems. I have had two initial doses, and now will have them every 6 months for three years.  I haven’t had any side effects from them. Apparently they make it more difficult for the cancer to get into the bones.

    Hi Sosad2019,

i have just come back from my 1at appointment with the consultant and considering they said they had caught all the cancer, I have now been told I must have bone injections every 3 weeks and it will coincide with the chemo treatment, I am a little unsure why I have to go through this, I have my 1st appointment at the cancer clinic next Monday. The line goes in Tuesday then 1st treatment starts on the 9th of August, I was diagnosed with stage 3 aggressive breast cancer, and lymph nodes, my treatment finished 20th December. Followed by 21 days straight of radiotherapy I am concerned because I wasn’t told this originally, hope everything goes well for your mom

  • The bone marrow injections are a usual part of the chemo treatment to keep your white blood count up. Sounds like this may be what you are describing.  I had FIlgrastim.

    staying positive . Helen x
  • Hi

Yes I also have Zometa infusions 6 monthly. I was also stage 3 and had osteoporosis. I also have to take calcium/vitamin D supplements. There has apparently been some trials which indicate a possible chance that this could stop the cancer going into the bones.
