Struggling with how my breasts look after surgery

I had a wide local excision in March this year. I have very small breasts (A cup) and had a very large lump (including margins, I had 7cms of tissue removed plus the major ducts). To try to prevent too much of a dent in my breast the surgeon also removed a large eclipse of skin. The lump was in my left breast, to the left of the nipple, and the side of my breast, from the nipple outwards, is now completely empty (basically, I've lost about half of my breast)

As you can probably imagine, my breasts are now very uneven, the left one is noticeably smaller, half empty and much higher than the right (healthy) breast. I've been told by a breast care nurse that in a few months I can be referred for reconstruction but the thought of further surgery is too much for me right now.

I'm finding the changes to my body extremely distressing and I'm hoping there are women here who can help me understand what to expect as the breast heals. Will my left breast 'drop' a little over the months? Will my body put a little fat into the hollow of the left breast? When will my nipple stop feeling sore to the touch? (it was cut around to remove the major ducts) How the hell do I come to terms with all of this and deal with the emotional shock of the surgery and the after effects? Any other advice/info on healing and what to expect regarding how it might look long term?

    Hi maggiemee

Thanks for your very reassuring message. I've been massaging the scar area since the 6 week mark and it's really softened and 'relaxed' (it's nice to know I'm doing the right thing) You're right, I have to give it time, I think I've been impatient because I want to forget it ever happened but that's not realistic.

    big hugs xx

Hi Helen, your reply has made me realise how hard I've been on myself!

I love the idea of junior boogie!!! You're right, she needs bit more TLC right now, but is still one of the team. I'm going to work on that as a way of accepting the changes. I'll probably request a plastic surgery consult in the autumn just to see what options there are. I really don't think I want more surgery, so I'll ask about lipofilling (although I'm very skinny so there might not be enough fat anywhere to fill the gap, but who knows, plenty of wine and chocolate might solve that problem Grinning)

    love and hugs xxx

I have just worked out a new way to even up the boobies.

I bought some bandeau top things last year and they had padding in them bit like what you get in a swimming Cossie. I never used the padding but luckily kept them in my draw.  So today I have put one in my post surgery bra, it has pockets inside, and my boobs are now equal again.

    It feels great Thumbsup tone1

post surgery bras were £5 from Asda xx

, that looks useful. Is the padding quite rigid/full? ie would there be space for my half boob?

I started swimming again a couple of weeks ago. I treated myself to a new swimsuit from TK Maxx, it has moulded cups which hide my tiny half boob. I popped my swimsuit on, had a quick look in the changing room mirror and got into the pool feeling confident. Only to discover, once the swimsuit was wet, the moulded cup folded inwards and stuck to my scar - fully accentuating my lack of boob! Joy (I laugh now, but I was pretty devastated at the time). This week I pulled the padding out of an old bra and stuck that into the cup of my swimsuit but it kept shifting around and I spent half my time fiddling around with it and worrying it would come out completely and sink! The padding you have looks like it might work better - can you remember where you got the bandeau tops from? I'll hunt around for something similar xx

Its brill i've walked around with my chest out all week since i worked it out lol

The Bandeau tops were from Primark, i got a grey one and a while one. There are little pockets on them for the padding so easy to take in and out. They'd fit your little boob in no problem. My new boob is smaller than my old boob and evens them out lovely. They're quite rigid but not uncomfortable, in fact i can't even tell it's there.

You can also buy the padding from ebay, i think i searched bra padding, they're only a couple of quid for a pair. You can get the triangular ones or round ones. I'm going to get both and see which works best.

Have you thought of putting a bit of velcro on the back of the padding and in the cup of your swimsuit? it might stop if from having a mind of its own. You got me thinking about my swimsuit, i know it had padding in when i bought it but i think i might have taken it out, but it will also mean it has little pockets to put the padding back in.

I'm so glad you started this or i'd have never even thought of trying stuff. I feel great going out now i don't feel wonky anymore.

  • Just as an extra, I investigated Primark and they do have a decent selection of non wired but padded bras (I’ve never worn wired as the wires always hurt!)

I duly bought 3, and am happy with the comfort. My implant boob is smaller than my ‘good’ one, but I’m waiting to discuss again in September whether it’s going to be worth further surgery or not.

Hehe!!! i bought a pack of 3 last week, primark will be having a rush on there padded none wired bras Laughing

I have always had wires but don't think they'll feel very comfy under my arm now, so have bought the padded without wires. The only issue is they only do up to a 36 back so as i have a bit of blubber i've bought some bra extensions to make them more comfortable.

    There's nothing we can't do :O)

  • Ha! I’m much bigger than that (I blame it on a life time of choral singing, lol!) and had to buy XL! And no, no ability to buy packs of 3!

  • !!!

The technical term is GRANULATION for the action of cells growing into flesh after surgery. I had appointment at the clinic and saw two doctors the first one couldn't even see where I had had the operation, so there you go it does change, soften, grow, fade into you xxx

  • I bought removable bra insert pads from amazon, they go inside my bra to fill out the space! I’ve also used them in my swimming costume as well. I do use tape on the back to keep them in place if I’m wearing something where I’m worried it may show. I also bought some other ones which were specifically for swimwear and they have a sticky back so stay in place - they were a mixture of round and triangular ones.

    Hope this helps, Helen x
